I once heard an interesting rumour that it was Princess Margreth who started this tradition. Apparently because she was so small, her artistic groom suggested it, so that the bride would not be over-shadowed by taller grown-up young women.

https://www.goodhousekeep...ids-throughout-the-years/

1885: the wedding of Princess Beatrice of Great Britain (youngest daughter Queen Victoria) and Prince Henry of Battenberg. All 10 of Princess Beatrice's nieces played a role in her wedding to Prince Henry of Battenberg. The ivory gowns of the bridesmaids paled in comparison to Princess Beatrice's, a lace dress passed down from her mother Queen Victoria.

1893: King George V's sisters and nieces The wedding of King George V and Princess Mary of Teck was as luxe as you'd imagine. The couple had 10 bridesmaids, including all of the King's sisters and nieces.

1922: Princess Maud The granddaughter of King Edward VII was one of Viscount Lascelle and Princess Mary's eight bridesmaids. The following year, Princess Maud and Lord Carnegie had a wedding of their own.

1923: Lady Mary Cambridge and Lady May Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess of York continued with the large wedding party trend (because why not?!). The couple was joined by eight bridesmaids, including Queen Mary's two nieces.

1923: Lady Mary Cambridge A few months after the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York, Lady Mary Cambridge returned to her bridesmaid duties at the Earl of Eltham and Dorothy Hastings' October wedding.

1935: Princess Elizabeth Nine-year-old. Princess Elizabeth (two decades before her coronation) served as one of eight bridesmaids at her uncle's wedding to Princess Alice.

1946: Princess Elizabeth, Princess Alexandra, and Princess Margaret
Princess Elizabeth served as one of the bridesmaids at Lord Brabourne and Patricia Mountbatten's autumn wedding. But it gets better: One month later, she married Prince Philip, the first cousin of Lord Brabourne.

1946: Princess Elizabeth. The future Queen continues to make her rounds: She served as a bridesmaid to Vicary Gibbs and A.G.V. Elphinstone.

1947: Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandra Because even the Queen needs a shoulder (or eight) to lean on. During her wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess was attended by eight bridesmaids, including her younger sister, Margaret.

1950: Princess Margaret. A few years later, Princess Margaret played a major role in Margaret Elphinstone and Denys Rhodes' wedding at St. Margaret. Clearly, she's a professional bridesmaid at this point.

1952: Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall Before Camilla became a royal, she served as a bridesmaid at Jeremy Cubitt and Diana du Cane's wedding with her younger sister, Annabelle. See? She was destined for royalty from the start.

1960: Princess Anne. At just nine years old, Princess Anne was one of Princess Margaret's bridesmaids when she wed fashion photographer Antony Armstrong. Sadly, the fairytale didn't last long. The couple divorced in 1978, the first royal divorce in more than 200 years.

1963: Lady Doune Ogilvy All eyes were on the four bridesmaids — Lady Doune Ogilvy, Archduchess Elizabeth of Austria, Georgina Butter, and Emma Tennant — at Princess Alexandra and Angus Ogilvy's wedding, which drew in an estimated 200 million viewers.

1973: Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones The nine-year-old daughter of Princess Margaret served as the one and only bridesmaid at Princess Anne and Mark Phillip's wedding. While their page boy was Anne's nine-year-old brother, Prince Edward The bride and bridesmaid were twinning in Tudor-style dresses.

1981: India Hicks and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones. Ruffles galore! India Hicks, 13, and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, 17, wore ivory tiered dresses at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.

1985: Zara Phillips Four-year-old Zara Phillips served as a bridesmaid at Zara Legge-Bourke and Richard Drax's wedding. The bride's name might ring a bell: Her sister is Tiggy Pettifer, the former royal nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

1986: Alice Ferguson Before their highly speculated divorce, Sarah Ferguson (known as "Fergie") and Prince Andrew had a sweet wedding ceremony, with the bride's half-sister, Alice, and Prince William serving as the bridesmaid and page boy, respectively.

1988: Lady Gabriella Windsor Long live the '80s! The bridesmaids at Julia Rawlinson and James Ogilvy's summer wedding complemented the bride with matching floral headpieces, white dupioni silk, and puffy sleeves.

1989: Eleanor Fellowes and Emily Mccorquodale The whirlwind romance of Princess Diana's brother, Viscount Althorp, and model Victoria Lockwood was a media goldmine. On the big day, the bride's unique fashion choice was the main attraction — same goes for her bridesmaids. And yes, that's a young Prince Harry in the middle!

1993: Lady Frances Everyone was talking about Serena Stanhope's Princess Margaret-inspired dress at her wedding to Lord Linley. But we can't help but notice the metallic bridesmaids and page boy outfits. Lady Frances, the younger half-sister of Lord Linley, was one of the bridesmaids.

1994: Lady Frances and Zara Phillips Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones went for an all-white affair when she married Daniel Chatto. The bridesmaids — Lady Frances, Zara Phillips, and Tara Noble Singh — were nearly identical to the bride (sans veil, of course).

1997: Mary Vestey
When Saffron Vestey, the daughter of Lord Vestey, married race car driver Matthew Charles Idiens they brought color — and fun — to St. Andrew's Church. Hannah Oliviennes and the Honorable Mary Vestey were the bridesmaids.

1999: Olivia Taylor
Five-year-old Olivia Taylor stole the show at the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones. The couple notably kept their special day very private — and drama-free — by holding the wedding at Windsor Castle.

2004: Lady Rose Windsor
Lady Davina Windsor leaned on her younger sister, Lady Rose Windsor, for support when she married Gary Christie Lewis at the chapel in Kensington Palace. The sisters — Lady Rose stunning blue — lived in the palace during their early years.

2008: Zara Phillips
Once a bridesmaid, always a bridesmaid. Zara Phillips served as the bridesmaid at Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly in a strapless sage green dress.

2011: Grace van Cutsem, Lady Louise, Margarita Armstrong Jones and Eliza Lopes
Pippa Middleton became a household name after her sister's wedding to Prince William. But the bridesmaids, donning simple cream dresses, kept us entertained. Anyone remember Grace's hilarious pouty face?!

2011: Stephanie Phillips
To complement the hot July weather, the bridesmaids at Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall's wedding went for a summer casual vibe. Stephanie Phillips, the younger half-sister of the bride, was one of the four bridesmaids.

2017: Princess Charlotte
Prince George and Princess Charlotte: page boy and brides maid at the wedding of their maternal aunt Philippa Middleton &  James Matthews..

2017: Prince George and Princess Charlotte: page boy and brides maid at the wedding of their paternal uncle Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Prince George and Princess Charlotte at the wedding of Sophie Carter and Robert Snuggs

2018: wedding of Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank. The bride's elder sister Princess Beatrice of York, as maid of honour the bridesmaids and page boys would all be children. A total of six bridesmaids and two page boys were chosen: Eugenie's godchild, Maud Windsor, daughter of Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor, her cousin Peter Phillips' daughters Isla and Savannah Phillips, her cousin Zara Tindall's elder daughter Mia Tindall, her cousin the Duke of Cambridge's eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, as well as Theodora Williams, daughter of Ayda Field and Robbie Williams, and Louis de Givenchy, son of Olivier and Zoë de Givenchy. Eugenie's cousins Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, were also confirmed to be special attendants.

"Good Housekeeping" magazine, Celia.

Thank you Principessa  Star

I love the simplicity of Zara Tindall's bridesmaids' dresses.

Ah, thank you.  I'm kind of surprised anything associated with Martha Stewart would have so many errors.  She seems like such a control freak.
