Prince William said it's rather normal to see war and bloodshed in Africa and Asia but not Europe, during a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London today. "It's very alien to see this in Europe. We are all behind you," he told the volunteers there.

He’s factually correct there.

Is he, though? The war in the former Yugoslavia was only 25ish years ago, within most people’s living memory. His comment jarred with me, I must admit.

I don’t know about that actually. To me it seems many have actually forgotten and certainly he’s not the only public person who has said that. I don’t know how young you have to be to not remember the war either. Everyone under 25 obviously won’t but for people William’s age, I wonder if they recall the war.

It’s not wrong to say it’s alien to see war on the European continent either, because the Yugoslavia civil war was horrific and at the time I think people feel much like they do now. I think it speaks to how hard won the current long time of peace in Europe has been. Every European nation has a long history of war with neighbouring countries. After the most horrible century peace and civil relationships and corporation with most European countries being the new, nice normal, seeing conflict, invasion and war like this is very jarring.

I am slightly older than William and Kate and I even remember & am still aware of the war in former Yugoslavia.

It’s a flawed logic to deduce because something works one way for you, it does so for everyone.

I was teen and remember very well but I am not judging people who were kids at the time for forgetting. Plenty of people forget things. There’s an on-going conflict on Crete. Technically there’s been a war-like situation in Ukraine since 2014.. a straight up invasion of another country hasn’t happened since Hungary, I believe and that didn’t lead to a war.

Crete? What’s going on with Crete! The Turkish invasion to Cyprus (that they recently visited) of ‘74 is also another war that is gloss over. While he is true in the last what 70 years Europe had 3 wars (Cyprus, yongoslavia and Ukraine) that doesn't mean that Europeans and westerns have not hand in the rest of the wars that are happening (ex. Afghanistan )

The US and certain European countries (it’s far from all European countries. Some are very particular about being neutral or only supporting peace keeping missions like in Crete) are heavily involved in many wars that are and have been going on for the last 25 years.

That does not take away that there has not been an invasion war on the continent since 1945.

That wasn’t his point though. He didn’t deny the three or four armed conflicts in Europe in recent decades. His point was proximity, frequency and experience of war.

The Soviets rolled over Eastern Europe in the 1950s and 1960s they were incapable of defending themselves so no technical war but I’m sure they saw it as an occupation... probably aided by communist sympathetic regimes ... eventually they got “freedom” many decades later

I knew there was a country I had forgotten after Hungary.. Secret

The Cold War was very real in most of Europe. Perhaps it’s yet another reason the Ukraine situation is upsetting for many. It’s been many years since we have been afraid of Russia.

Posted just now. Every reporter is correcting the record now.

Robert Jobson@theroyaleditor
William on Ukraine “Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. It’s really horrifying. The news every day, it’s just, it’s almost unfathomable. For our generation, it’s very alien to see this in Europe. We’re all right behind you. We’re thinking about you. We feel so useless”

Robert Jobson
@theroyaleditor

I am simply saying what he actually said. Not correcting anybody. They will have to change their online posts when they see and hear what he said.
