Char’s video was adorable. What I love is the twins seem extraordinary close. A very special relationship.

Some kids do stuff like that. Draw on the wall. Cut their own hair. It doesn’t have to mean that anything’s wrong.

Totally agree, Harls.

I did it... when I was 6 or 7 years old.

Cut the hair of all my dolls, and our dog, and then gave myself a grand new haircut, to the horror of my family. Meanwhile, I thought I looked fabulous and was highly insulted, that no one else thought the same.

The picture of Gabriella isn’t going to go over well. That’s total cultural appropriation.

Oh for goodness sake. It’s learning about another culture. Did the Pakistanis cane Kate for wearing their national dress on a royal visit? No. They loved it.
Canada’s worst contribution to the planet IMO has been to spearhead misguided woke policies.

Clearly things are different for you where you live, Hester, but this wouldn’t fly in Canada. You might think it’s the worst contribution to the planet but I don’t think calling out cultural appropriation can ever be a bad thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So glad I grew up in a time where a little girl could dress up as a cartoon character without it being called racism.

I agree with AB. This wouldn’t fly in a lot of places.

It’s not racism (and I don’t want to get into that debate because Maria has said she doesn’t wish to host those discussions), I said cultural appropriation. There’s nothing wrong with loving characters that are different than you, but there are some I’d never dress up as because it would offend a lot of people.

Didn’t mean to even cause a debate here, I genuinely assumed everyone else would be as surprised as I was over this photo.

Amen to that. Star Ridiculous to call out a small child for dressing up as a video game character.

Hope the twins enjoyed their birthday celebrations, they have been through so much lately. I love the photo and think Gabriella looks very cute.

Cultural appropriation, imo, is complex and I don’t think a little girl dressing up in this case is it. It’s more about how is the cultural dress being presented? Is it as a Halloween costume, like a joke? Is it from a culture that has been historically oppressed like Africans (blackface) or American Indians (headdress wearing doing a silly rain dance)…is it using cultural dress inappropriately like a sacred spiritual material being used as a napkin for a theme dinner?

Context matters.

So AB which characters is it ok to “appropriate” as a costume? All literature and therefore cartoons have cultural roots. Every African or other leader who wears a tie is appropriating Croatian culture…and are we allowed to have a croissant for breakfast?

You’re not allowed to continue this discussion.

Another topic we cannot really host well. And it’s also O/T in this thread regardless.

Yes they do seem to be especially close siblings.  I hope that continues throughout their lives.

They must be loving having their mom with them this holiday season.
