Queen Elizabeth I legislated for a Protestant church with the monarch at its heads. She refused her father's title of Head of the Church. It was argued the position could only be held by a man since men could not be ruled by women in matters of religious doctrine.

When Queen Mary I died, King Henry II of France announced that, as Elizabeth was illegitimate, the throne of England belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, who was married to his eldest son, the Dauphin Louis. According to this reasoning, the Queen of Scotland, who would be the next Queen Consort of France, was also now Queen of England.

Good enough reason, actually. There were several other claims to thrones that were murkier. And quite understandable for the King of France to at least try his french luck. And while poor Mary had a very nasty end of her life, the fact that Elizabeth then chose Mary's son as heir, was a victory.

As Crown Prince of Sweden, Eric XIV learned that his brother, Duke John of Finland, who acted as Eric's emissary, had begun to woo Queen Elizabeth I of England on his (John's) own behalf. Eric recalled his brother John.

Ok. I've never heard of this, and it's striking me as very, very funny. I'm probably laughing harder than I should. "Oh, wooing the Queen eh? Get thyself back to home to Sweden!" Thanks for all the information, CyrilSebastian!

Allegedly, Mary had embroidered in a cushion: «ma fin es mon commencement», and looking it in hindsight, it was. Almost every single monarch in Europe is her descendant, one way or another.

Princess Elizabeth refused to entertain marriage with Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont. She knew that she would have the support of the Council, who would oppose any attempt to have her married abroad to a Spanish nobleman.

An interesting woman! I confess I knew nothing about her before now. Thank you for drawing her to our attention.
