Jewels: Queen Máxima's inauguration tiara

September 19, 2024
·
On April 30, 2013, King Willem-Alexander was inaugurated in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. His wife Máxima wore a sapphire inauguration tiara during this historic moment. This is the story behind the royal jewel.

"During the inauguration, Queen Máxima wore a tiara set with diamonds and sapphires," says jewelry historian Martijn Akkerman. "The tiara was once commissioned by King Willem III for Queen Emma. The sapphires came partly from his brother, Prince Hendrik the Navigator, who had inherited the sapphires from Anna Paulowna. But with the clause that the sapphires had to be returned to the Netherlands if he died childless. That happened and that is when the tiara was created."

"The diadem had a different shape during the inauguration than the original shape," Akkerman explains. "In the middle there is a kind of raised part, you could say, and during the inauguration that was gone. That had a reason."

Russian kokoshnik
"Because of the link with Russia, with the Romanovs and the Russian blood, the king and queen had ordered to make a kokoshnik from this diadem. A kokoshnik is the Russian word for cock's comb and also the word for a headdress worn by Russian peasant women. A kind of cardboard covered with fabric. Later that shape was worn by the nobility and the Russian court as a diadem."

"During the state visit to Denmark in 2016, it turned out that the centerpiece with a large sapphire from Anna Paulowna can also be put back on. So the queen has it converted so that the original state can be restored. The centerpiece can also be worn as a brooch."

In the past a picture of a young Amalia has been released, trying out a tiara in (apparently) mothers dressing room (?)

But currently she is at the age of really wearing tiara's and other royal jewels:

The owner of this site reacted on the question which bracelet Amalia wore this week at the state diner (because of the state visit by the Portuguese President to the Netherlands):

Loosely translated:

For the answer, we have to go back almost ninety years in time. When the engagement of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard was announced on 8 September 1936, a committee was set up in the Dutch East Indies to contribute to the festivities in the kingdom. A beautiful, wide diamond bracelet was chosen. A large delegation of Indian royal houses travelled to the Netherlands for the wedding festivities. Upon arrival in The Hague, Princess Juliana was presented with this platinum bracelet set with 1700 (!) diamonds at the palace on the Kneuterdijk on 30 December 1936, a week before her wedding.

For the bracelet, mostly flawless, South African brilliant-cut diamonds were used. The bracelet also contained 34 square-cut diamonds. The motifs of the bracelet were divided into 3 sections; the middle section consisted of the Dutch crown with the wings of the Garuda bird. The left and right sides consisted of a complete version of this half-human, half-eagle creature originating from Hindu mythology. Arabesques (rhythmic patterns, repetitive lines of movement and a typical use of leaves and spirals) were applied as decorations. During her reign, Juliana frequently wore the bracelet on state visits, state portraits and festivities.

After her abdication, the masterpiece disappeared from the royal stage. It seemed to be hidden deep in the vault. Queen Beatrix never wore the striking and eye-catching jewel.

But then Máxima made her entrance… She (and later Queen Beatrix) appeared several times with two different diamond bracelets… And what turned out, after having looked closely at the bracelets? Juliana’s wedding gift has been dismantled! A jeweler has created two smaller bracelets from one wide, beautiful bracelet. Including the jewel that Amalia had on her wrist yesterday.

On Prinsjesdag 2023, Amalia also wore the bracelet.

The second bracelet is made from the outer edges of Juliana's bracelet.

The large central diamond from Juliana's bracelet has been used for a diamond ring that Queen Máxima has now been seen wearing twice.
