Is there such a thing as "King consort"? I think thats all the guy is wishing for.

       
     
King consort is an alternative title to the more usual prince consort.     
It is a symbolic title only.

I believe in Portugal the tradition was that a male consort would become King Consort if a male heir was born.

Georgiana, that is correct.     
In 1836 Prince Ferdinand married Queen Maria II of Portugal.     
In September of 1837, Queen Maria gave birth to a son and heir.     
According to Portuguese law, her husband became King Ferdinand II of Portugal.
