Thistle  is one of my favourite flowers and has a royal connection, Order of the Thistle. It is Scottish and has the most awesome dark green ropes!

One of my favourite pictures of QEII was taken with the Thistle ropes, the Vladimir in its emerald splendor and at Balmoral! It is so amazing Star

Sublime, Thistle.  Star

That Picture is fantastic, however I always thought QEII looked photoshopped into it...

Thank you all for your answers and explanations...so fascinating!  Star

I do hope more members will keep answering; there are lots of names out there that I'm still so curious about!

Carreen is for the youngest O'Hara sister, one of my favourite characters in the book. I don't know why but when I read it first, about the age Carreen is at the beginning of the book, I liked her best and still do. I wish somebody would write down her story!

Chandrasekhi: from the Chandrasekhar Limit - at the limit of stability before collapse: the sweet spot

Ha ha!! I feel like I’m at that spot every day! What a great name.

Thanks for the explanations!   Star

For some reason, I was reading "Dame" in my mind as da-may, which makes no sense; perhaps I thought it was a Spanish nickname?  That makes no sense either since the last time I took Spanish, Fergie and Andrew were still married!  Laugh bounce

And thanks for the explanations of your names...it's fun to hear these stories!

Edit:  I remember reading the posts that led to the TrollSpoon nickname...can't remember when or which thread!  Paulina, I'm sorry your kitty passed away Sad  I'm sitting here struggling to type as my rescue kitty is trying to pin down both of my hands.  Fairy, you definitely bring the sparkle and wisdom!

I chose my name because, well, I don’t like to brag, but I’m very rich and famous and it would make everyone uncomfortable if they knew who I really believe I am.

Oh, Karen, Karen ;-)

Hi everyone and thank you for such a warm welcome!  I'm already so happy to have joined this board...I can't tell you how much I've learned in the time I've followed it, and honestly I've shared a lot of tidbits with my students as well (and I'm delighted to say that I have some students who are now as obsessed with tiaras as I am!)!   Smiley

I have two quite unimportant questions:

1.)  Why was the late Prince Henrik referred to as the Dame?

2.)  Would there be any interest in a thread where people explain why they chose their usernames?  I'm not trying to sleuth out people's real identities by any means but some of these names are so random/interesting/unique that I'm curious as to why they were chosen.  i.e. I'm a massive Anne of Green Gables fan (books only, please...no movies) so Cordelia Fitzgerald seemed a logical name to choose!  No worries if a thread like that is a nonstarter!  Smiley

Dear CF,

I named him that many a moons ago..because he just refused to give birth to that huge girth of his; plus he was so theatrical  Champagne

and my name, Getafix, is from Asterix

Certain Avatars I just love, too. Fairy’s is one of my favorites. It just strikes me as fun. Principessa is great, too. I love the long sleeve T-shirt with a crown. Plus, that avatar is the spitting image of my brother (sans crown) who I never get to see because he lives far away. Before I joined, I was a lurker for a long time and I remember one Avatar that I loved but I haven’t seen that member around anymore. It was an old lady wearing many colorful hats.

Hi everyone! Brand new to the board but not new to royal-watching. Mostly I stick to jewels and clothes, but every so often I get really curious about some of the personalities.

Which is how I ended up here. I've been puzzling for several years about the weirdness in Luxembourg. The very frumpy dressing (on most people), the relentless and illogical hand-me-downs for formal occasions, the over-use of some really sub-standard tiaras. And the overall lack of serious hair/makeup/style direction for Stephanie. Some people really don't have the knack for dressing themselves well... but in the royal world they also usually have a lot of help. On top of that, the very obvious work being done... I'm naive about a lot of these things but it was blindingly obvious in this case. There was only one way it made logical sense: that M-T was calling ALL the shots to make herself look as good as possible. I came desperate to find some honest, gloves-off discussion and found it here! What a relief! And also rather pleased that EVERYTHING I had suspected on my own is pretty much the board consensus.

Anyway! Glad to be here, and I'm hoping I don't step over any lines! It seems like a fun place and I want to stick around.
