You are paying for the name and well known design when you buy from Buccellati. Unfortunately, if you go to re sell any of that, all you get is the stones and gold/platinum weight back. When my late mother in law died, we took the pieces she had inherited from her own magpie mother (and never wore) to a client of my husband's who owns the diamond exchange building on 47th Street in NYC. While they pieces had many famous names (Tiffany, Van Cleef, etc) they appraised strictly on stones and metal. The Buccellati ring in the group, which is on that site for $21k+ appraised for $3k. It is for this reason that I have the client make up my jewelry. He can make what ever design with custom alterations for a fraction of going to Boucheron or where ever. I can tell you that when we opened the safety deposit box and I saw what was in it I was astounded. My late MIL NEVER wore jewelry. In 25 years I literally only ever saw her engagement/wedding ring on the day my husband and I married. She didnt even have pierced ears.
Same experience when my grandmother died. And we knew how much she had paid for the pieces, so it was really disappointing. Mostly only the gold (24 kt) and diamonds, and the bigger diamonds.
After that episode I completely lost interest in jewellery. I find it beautiful to wear, but I see it more as a sentimental piece to pass along in the family. I have some good pieces that I'll leave for my daughter, that I got as presents or inherited, but I won't be buying any more real jewellery for myself.
