The Times also reported that the state visit will still happen. Some Spanish press reports that Zarzuela is upset with May by calling the election on the last day of the state visit. They think it's disrespectful toward Spain. I guess Felipe won't be able to give a speech in the parliament since the parliament members will be campaigning. But with all international press's attention on the election, the state visit may get more attention as well. It will be an interesting situation. We'll see.

It's really disappointing, but maybe for the good.  The royal visit would have been put way down the list of importance with no interest in it media wise and that would be a pity.  I just hope they don't wait another year!

I hope (but doubt it could happen) they try and fit it in before the Queen's summer break.

What T. May was thinking anyway, I do believe it's disrespectful towards the guests (aka F&L), they could find an different day, the week after the visit maybe?
I was really anticipating to see all the bling!

Deferring to the heads of state of a European country while having an election which the governing party is campaigning on Brexit (and at the moment to the exclusion of all else)?  Not a hope.

From contradicting reports, it seems Downing St. 10 wants the state visit to go ahead and Spain wants to postpone. For Spain, especially Zarzuela, a speech in Westminster is a must. So the diplomats are scrambling.

Looking at the election in 2015, voting day was May 7, the new parliament was assembled on May 18 and the State opening of parliament was May 27. So, if the same schedule is followed, the Opening of parliament would be about June 28 and so the earliest date would be early July.

I think it probably won't happen until this fall ( have two state visits in autumn) or next spring.

Hypothetically Felipe could give a speech at Parliament on day 1 or 2 before the election.

Then again, Parliament is dissolved by May 4th or 5th I think, so no government to really speak to is there.

Letizia probably already bought outfits or had her gown made previously. I hope she still can wear them. Those she bought for last March may be too warm for July.

Like lula reminded me the state visit to Japan was postponed three times, but since there were no official announcements it was never this messy. F&L were supposed to visit Japan for the first time while they were still Prince&Princess of Asturias. It was postponed a first time because of a JC's surgery, it was rescheduled but had to be postponed again by his abdication, and lastly it was postponed last year with the political impasse in Spain.
