For those who would like a little respite/diversion from Freddles and the Wife, I thought I'd start a thread about books......ones that have been read, and those about to be read.

I'm taking a break from my usual, favourite topics, and somehow have started theme reading, partly coincidental, and partly influenced by a visit to China....the light stuff -
Fried eggs with Chopsticks by Polly Evans, and on the serious side, Mao by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday....and I have to admit, I have another on the go, A short history of tractors in Ukranian by Marina Lewycka, which I've just started, and is supposed to be very funny.
How about the rest of you? - what have you got on your book agendas?

Lupina, what do you think about "Tractors" ?  I've heard a lot about that book.

Have you read "Wild Swans"?

I am reading "Suite Francaise".

I haven't read either of them, but I just read the review for Suite, and it looks most interesting! I've just started Tractors, so I'm not in a position to comment yet.

As an aside...would you care to share your thoughts about China, from your travels there?

I am currently working on "Slaves in the family" by Edward Ball, a descendant of the Ball family who were once rich plantation and therefore slave owners in South Carolina. He researchs the history of the slave-families, who are so close connected to his family (some being fathered by their masters) and yet completely disappeared from his family history.
As light reading I just finished "Break no bones" by Kathy Reichs, I am a sucker for those CSI thrillers.

China under your own steam, using public transport etc, is apparently a daunting task, - if you have no knowledge of Chinese that is, time is another factor, as 'doing' China in a couple of weeks is a) impossible, and b) requires stamina! Taking these criteria into consideration, I opted for the proverbial package tour. These usually include all the obvious tourist attractions, Great Wall, Forbidden City, etc; for a first time venture to China, I was more than willing to participate in this kind of tourism, you can see a great deal in a short space of time as all the travel arrangements are planned. OK, - I went with no real preconcieved ideas, - what hits you in the face is all the construction work going on, high rises, like needles, to accommodate the influx of people magnetised towards the cities, and intricate flyovers through the cities, where the traffic goes past the 15th storey, and below some of the 'old' town, which they are in such a hurry to eradicate, and which is a shame, somethings should be preserved IMO. The Wall is an incredible masterpiece of engineering - I managed about 3 kilometres.....think I'll stop here, before you get the big yawn syndrome, and just say that it is China is available now, and very much worth a visit!

Thank you for those insights, Lupina!

I got really interested in The Wall because the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney currently has a major exhibit about it:

At the top of my reading wish-list is the new "Cambridge History of Russia" but the cost of all three volumes is a prohibitive £270.   :-/
