http://www.independent.co...n-future-at-a6929281.html

That tradition effectively ended after the disastrous 2005 trip to Klosters, when a still mic?d-up Prince Charles famously said of BBC royal correspondent Nick Witchell ?I can?t bear that man, I mean, he?s so awful, he really is.? And then the Daily Mirror?s Emily Nash wormed her way into the young princes? social group and revealed their partying antics.

Some might say the press forfeited its right to future invitations. No wonder, they might say, the Cambridges allowed only the veteran Press Association photographer John Stillwell ? who they?d trusted to picture Prince George on his first birthday ? to come to Courchevel.

But the pattern of press blackout goes much further. Since becoming a mother, the Duchess has largely preferred to release photos of Prince George and Princess Charlotte that she has taken herself. The Cambridges have stepped up their efforts to block publication of pictures which they claim are invasive, even when taken in public places. ?They have tried to create a new law of privacy around Kate and squashed pictures of her that have been taken quite legitimately,? one senior Fleet Street figure told me.

Ipso ruled in favour of Prince Andrew when he complained over press photos of his house being prepared for a Disney-themed party for his daughter Princess Eugenie. Repeated complaints from William led to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin imposing a permanent no-fly zone over Anmer Hall, the Cambridges? 10-bedroom home on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

While it?s perfectly understandable that William wants to protect his wife from the fate suffered by his mother, it?s something else to expect to live by different laws from the rest of society. The press now talks of the ?Middleton Rules?, shaped by William with Kate?s father, Michael, and intended to shield the Cambridges from the public gaze.

Hostility is growing. William is the subject of a press campaign, led by The Sun, which denounces him as workshy for his lack of public engagements and his 20-hour week as an air ambulance man. Kate is the ?Invisible Princess?.

It?s not just the press fighting for survival here. The Cambridges represent the future of the monarchy. Without the support of such once-fervently royalist titles such as The Sun, the Mail and the Express, that?s a future which is less certain. ?The public are turning on these two,? said one Henley-on-Thames commentator to Mail Online?s coverage of the ski blackout. ?Once the Queen goes, the Royal Family will fall apart.?

Kate is not Diana. Her front page pictures do not sell newspapers (though the children do, hence some of the problems). Kate and William are not big drivers of online traffic; Kim Kardashian?s nude selfies ruled on social media last week. The palace shouldn?t look to the HuffPo to organise the nation?s Union flag bunting and street parties.

There are signs that the public ? more than ever drawn to noisy extremes ? is a bit bored of a princess who is elegant but reticent and a prince who thinks he deserves the life of a Norfolk squire. They will need to be seen to match the work rate of William?s grandparents if they are to be considered global ambassadors worthy of their publicly funded lifestyles. The Firm?s fortunes, and the quality of its press, will briefly revive in April for the Queen?s 90th birthday. After that, the Royals and their once-faithful chroniclers need to patch up their differences, or be left without a purpose.

I've always thought there's been a tendency to lay all of what is questionable and unpleasant about the Middletons at the foot of Carole, and paint Mike as the submissive (even hen-pecked) but innocent husband.  Perhaps it suits him for that to be the impression; meanwhile he can be so close to William that W calls him "Dad" - because he sure as hell isn't going to call Carole "Mum".  Mike was the photographer of the first photos of George, after all.

What an utterly bizarre family, each and every one of them.

I know Daily Mail comments aren't representative of all UK thoughts but every time I read an article about the royals, I am always so surprised how many commenters don't want Charles and Camilla but either want the monarchy to end after HM or want it to go straight to W & K.  Nerves

I think they're a mixture of people who are just Pd of that day and want to vent, Diana fans who've hated Charles for years and don't like Camilla, people who think Charles is a meddling eccentric waffler and those who would like a fairly young couple on the throne (however vacuous) rather than a King and queen in their seventies. I suppose there are some as well who have drunk the Kool aid and think the Cambridge family is lovely.

I think many of the British are against Charles because of Camilla. To some, she will always be the woman that kept Charles from putting a real effort into his marriage, was a willing participant in something she should not have been and the cause of so much heartache.  It is hard to see her and not remember the past and her role in the events that transpired.  It is true that Camilla has gained points (popularity) with the press, that when people meet her, she is personable, likable, capable, and making a difference. But people have long memories and it takes a lot of years for the positive to outweigh the negative. Many people are narrow-minded and it takes a lot to change their minds.

The problem with William, since he is the major paranoid royal, keeping the press shut out is a major blunder that could potentially have significant ramifications for the monarchy.  The press serves as the middleman between the monarchy and the public. Used correctly, the press allows the monarch and the family to have a private life while also giving the public glimpses into the royals work life and yes, their private life.
Cut them out and not grant them some coverage of private life events means that ill-will develops on the press side and any event they do cover is becomes unfiltered and uncensored with no flattering spin or in Kate's case, no photo shop.  The press is, to some extent, the protective barrier between the royals and the public. They have the ability to manufacture the mystic that the royals need to keep their private life. When they cut out the press and control all releases of their own pictures, twitter messages, snap-chats, etc they [the royals] become common, every day celebrities, no different that the hundreds of other celebrities. Then the royals want to have their official events covered in a complimentary, censored, positive fashion.
There is a reason we are taught that you can't have it both ways -> Because You Can't. You can't treat people bad and expect them to continue to be nice to you. William needs to learn that regarding the press like an invading force and then expecting them to act like they are at a party when you need them to give you positive coverage at an event is not the way - to get privacy, peace, happiness, or his way.
Historically speaking, the royals began courting and using the press because out of sight, out of mind is a truism. If we, the public, do not see the royals doing events, they begin to appear to be expendable and unnecessary. However, seeing you at only official events is not enough. Without glimpses through the windows into their private lives, we do not develop the caring and the emotional investment into their welfare that makes us the public, feel like they are an integral, desirable, and necessary part of our lives.

Considering polls for the monarchy says W&K are the most popular, sometimes above the Queen, I'm not surprised that people would tihnk they should be next in line--not Charles or Camilla, because people never forget, as Princess has said. I personally don't care, myself, I think they will be excellent at their jobs and I love Camilla's warmth and natural ability to relate to people. Her work with sexual assault survivors, her work for literacy, is real stuff. She cares and wants to make a difference, and kept her head up whilst being the most hated woman in Britain. That takes a steely interior.

W&K still I think have the sheen of his mom on him and perhaps always will. People think he's the handsome young shy lad he was when he was 18-19 and talked about wanting to be generous, kind, caring. He is none of these things, but their PR machine works and works well.

Well, IMO Charles and Cam are doing themselves a disservice not being at big events like today, front and center.
That makes Neigh and Hey look important.  Snare
Cam finally gets some public goodwill and then disappears from sight for months at a time. She should be extremely front and center for the next few years ( unless very physically ill).  Snare

Seems HM is keeping them out of view lately ,  for some reason.

excellent points  Thumb up I totally agree and couldn't have put it into the right words  Star

they have already changed the narrative with their childish behavior>>>> "work shy" is not going away any time soon, I think the press may have gotten to the point there's more money in demolishing them than building them up.  Have many times have we seen Charlotte after almost a year? 2- 3 times. not only is that ridiculous it's giving fodder to the cannon.  Personally I hope the press eats them alive JMO JMO
