When has Spain and the scandinavian royals ever celebrated anything the same way? Different countries and traditions. It was a 22 minute clip of arrivals and Sonjas speech, broadcast in the middle of the day when people work, 69 guests, over half family and friends, the PM did not attend and and there were lower representation from the goverment, sami council, supreme court etc. exception beeing the president of Stortinget and mayor of Oslo who was there. Litle attention was given in the press, no interviews. Its very much toned down since ML had a white tie gala dinner with royal guests and tv interview when she was 18 which is a more relevant comparrison for him than what they do or not do in Spain.

It's easy to forget we have a special window into these events that the general public doesn't necessarily have unless they are really looking. I like that they haven't treated him any differently than his sister in the sense that he gets a quasi public lunch. It and the bunad are reminders to him that he is a part of something bigger than his person. A reminder that other generations may not have received if they all expected a big fancy dress ball as a mark of their higher social status as opposed to that we are all links in a larger chain.

Probably an unpopular opinion:  I don't have anything against Sverre Magnus - but frankly this "official celebration" of his 18th birthday, with TV coverage no less, seems a bit excessive.  I would think a private birthday luncheon and official photos released afterward would be sufficient.   Sofia of Spain is in the same position as SM and I'm not expecting Felipe & Letizia to give her a large televised celebration when her time comes.

I think it’s ok for there to be different rules for different royal families. The Spanish RF is under constant threat of being abolished, while the Norwegian RF is cherished by the Norwegians, so it makes sense to me for the NRF to be more expansive.. and I love seeing glimpses into Sverre Magnus’ celebration!

Well, I said I would have the unpopular opinion.  I must say though, I wasn't comparing the celebrations of Spanish and Scandinavian royals exactly - I could have easily substituted Isabella of Denmark for Sofia of Spain, or Alexia of the Netherlands.  My point being, it just seems a public & somewhat extravagant celebration for the 18th birthday of a younger child.

I will admit this coverage is not as repugnant (to me) as that of Christian of Denmark's party and SM seems to have a bit more dignity & charm than poor Christian; as I said I have nothing against him.

I just mean that the attention and celebration might look bigger on a royal board than how it is percived in the real world, very litle interest and press compared to his sisters celebration which got alot of attention and hours and hours of tv in prime time over several days, (especially as it was both in january and june), just as his birth, christening and confirmation got much less interest, press and tv-time.

Today is his actually birthday and on Instagram they post a smal  «interview» with his sister that includes some smal private videoclips of him skiing, surfing and cyceling. He says a parachute jump is also on his bucketlist and they show photos of what I think is Ingrids tandem jump.

He looks so handsome in the bunad and that formal picture with the maternal grandmother is so lovely-I wish Marius could have been in it though*.

I find it refreshing to have such a grand celebration for a spare heir, I hope he will continue to have a good relationship with the family and the sister when she's Queen (I can't help but be wary of the example his aunt has set unfortunately)

(*and yes I realize this was probably at Marius' preference)

I’m just catching up, too.  He’s grown into an interesting mix of Harald, Sonja and MM.  Love the interview!  The two of them are cute together.

I love how much he resembles his grandfather more and more.  But, I recently saw a young photo of Harald and Haakon looked so much like him.  Be interesting to have the 3 of them stand next to each other, to see the family resemblances.

Congratulations to Sverre.  Wonder what he’ll do next.

Well, no wonder we didn’t see him at the Palace balcony for Syttende Mai. This is his last year of high school and of course this is a day when he would want to hang with all of his buddies doing Russ things. I think it’s a day that every Norwegian remembers and probably most of them also remember the giant hangovers they had the next day. It’s kind of the last big blowout of the teenage years.
