Actually I found Caroline's dress to be interesting, amusing and chic, in a peculiar way. It reminded me very much of some of the over-the-top black-and-white costumes worn for the Ascot race scene in ``My Fair Lady'' that were designed by Cecil Beaton. (Incidentally, the dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in that scene sold for $3.7 million at auction in 2011).
The dress did play an interesting homage to Emilie Fl?ge, who was herself a fashion designer in the era of the Wiener Werkst?tte. I have loved the textiles and some of the fashions from that era. You can see images of some of the fashions of the era at the link below. A number of the designs are in black and white, as is the case with Caroline's Lagerfeld frock. https://pinsndls.com/2013...of-the-wiener-werkstatte/
I infinitely prefer Caroline's dress to that pink prom-dress monstrosity sported by Princess Barbie at the same event.
Your mileage may vary, of course.
