Charles, King of Canada, comes with subtle message for Trump

Arjen van der Horst
correspondent United Kingdom

Canadians are generally quite ambivalent about their head of state, who lives far across the pond. The French-speaking part of the population in particular would rather be rid of the British monarch.

But when King Charles addresses the Canadian parliament today from a walnut throne decorated with golden maple leaves, there will be little discord. The red carpets are rolled out, the trumpets and salutes sound loud and clear.

For the first time in years, the popularity of the British royals is on the rise in Canada. This cannot be seen separately from the second term of Donald Trump. The American president has unleashed a wave of Canadian patriotism with positive side effects for the royal family.

Close bond
There has never been any ambiguity on the part of the Windsors. The British monarch is still the head of state of fifteen countries, including the United Kingdom, but Canada has always held a special place in the heart of the royal family. During her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth made 22 official visits to Canada, more than to any other Commonwealth country.

However, it is rare for the British monarch to open the Canadian parliament. This is a role traditionally reserved for the governor general, the monarch's deputy in Canada. The Queen has opened the Canadian parliament twice, the last time in 1977 during her Silver Jubilee. The fact that King Charles is opening parliament today with a speech - in English and French - underlines the close ties. But Charles' presence also sends an unspoken, subtle message to our southern neighbors. President Trump has been disparaging about Canada in recent months, describing it as "the 51st state of America." He referred to recently resigned Prime Minister Trudeau as "governor."

Trump has repeatedly suggested that Canada would be better off annexed by the United States. "You can always become an American state," he said shortly after taking office in January. "And if you are an American state, there will be no trade deficit. We won't have to impose tariffs on you."

Anti-American nationalism
He said it jokingly, but Canadians are taking his remarks very seriously. These remarks, combined with Trump's trade war, have had an impact in Canada, where anti-American nationalism has flared up. It has even led to calls to boycott American products.

Trump has also had a miraculous impact on the parliamentary elections earlier this year. Trudeau's Liberals were miles behind in the polls and seemed to have no chance of continuing their term of office. The new leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney, presented himself as the anti-Trump during the election campaign and managed to secure a resounding election victory.

King Charles has since continued to emphasise the close ties with Canada. He praised Canada as a "steadfast and compassionate country". During the state visit to Italy, he called himself the "king of the United Kingdom and Canada".

At the 80th anniversary of the liberation in the Second World War, he praised the efforts of allied troops "in which the British and Canadian forces played a key role". Last week, he visited the Canadian embassy in London to celebrate the embassy's 100th anniversary.

Love bomb
King Charles will not explicitly lash out at Trump during his speech today - he is too diplomatic for that. But the Canadians nevertheless interpreted his visit as a royal "love bomb" and a rejection of Trump's teasing. Prime Minister Carney was less reserved in his assessment. He sees the visit as "a clear message of sovereignty".

A few highlights from Charles speech:

Quote
“Every time I come to Canada…a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream—and from there straight to my heart,” Charles wrote in the preface to his speech.

“Today, Canada faces another critical moment,” he said in a speech written for him by the Canadian government. “Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the government is determined to protect.”

“The system of open global trade that, while not perfect, has helped to deliver prosperity for Canadians for decades, is changing,” Charles said. “Canada’s relationships with partners are also changing.”

“The prime minister and the president of the United States, for example, have begun defining a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S., rooted in mutual respect and founded on common interests, to deliver transformational benefits for both sovereign nations,” Charles said.

“Canada is ready to build a coalition of like-minded countries that share its values, that believe in international cooperation and the free and open exchange of goods, services and ideas,” Charles said Tuesday.

The chairs say EIIR, I wonder if they'll ever be changed for the current monarch?
