Well that is a very respectful and necessary field. Certainly the Netherlands is a leader. Good for her. I like that the daughter who is maligned for being an airhead pouty poser has a mechanical brain. Show them girl.

Her paternal uncle Friso also studied engineering. Based on his studies he was also called/ nicknamed Prince Bolleboos (something like a brainiac, book smart)

From 1986 until 1988, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1988 he studied at Delft University of Technology, where he obtained an engineer's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1994. From 1990 he also went to the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he obtained an MSc degree in business economics in 1995. Subsequently, he attended INSEAD (Fontainebleau, France), where he received an MBA degree in 1997

An engineer princess?
What a pleasant surprise. She could've majored in art history or fashion or some other lighter weight subject as would be expected of a privileged daughter of a king and who is expected to do nothing more than "represent" and look good.
But she chose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
She has some really hard work ahead of her (I know because I studied engineering too).
If she uses her privilege to do something really useful with her degree, I would immediately be her biggest fan.
I kinda wish I studied civil engineering so I could've tried to solve problems in the developing world (e.g. sourcing and purifying drinking water, building low-cost sustainable homes, etc).

Respect. You go girl!

The princess had a gap year last year, during which she "travelled and got to know other cultures".[/i]

When you don't specify activities saying something like I traveled and got to know other cultures sounds like "through their beer culture" lol. I support her getting a degree to help affect social change but when your summer activities don't align with the program it always sounds off and that is not even meant as a criticism. But the daughter of the King of the NL would ideally be working with non profits that are working in areas of change she's interested in. And then you go on your beer sampling backpack trip lol.

Why couldn't she have just "traveled and got to know other cultures" like she said? It's fine for her to also have fun while doing that (drinking some beer here and there). She has enormous privilege. If she used that privilege to travel to expose herself to other cultures, then I applaud her.

In light of her academic focus on engineering for social change and now civil engineering after the gap year, I'd say she learned some things during her travels that have informed her academic choices. Good for her!

Loosely translated as:

Amalia is happy to be living in Amsterdam again, Alexia is enjoying herself in London

Update: 1 day ago

Princess Amalia is happy to be living in Amsterdam again and is having "a great time" in the capital, she told NOS during King's Day in Doetinchem. The princess lived and studied in Madrid in 2023 because she was seriously threatened in the Netherlands.
Earlier this month, Amalia was in Madrid to thank the city with a plaque for its support during her time there. "I thought it was very important to thank Madrid in that way, because they have done so much for me," said the 21-year-old princess on King's Day, which she described as "a wonderfully bright day". "And now back in Amsterdam and just having a great time again."

Amalia started studying Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the University of Amsterdam in 2022. The heir to the throne was about to move to the capital when it became known that she was being threatened. The princess then continued to live at home for a while and then left for Spain to stay there for a year.

"I am incredibly grateful to everyone who made that possible for me there. And I am happy to be back," the princess said earlier, after her return to the Netherlands. The threat has not yet disappeared, but thanks to measures she can live and study in the Netherlands again. What kind of measures these are, is not known.

Princess Alexia also spoke briefly to the NOS. She said that she is having a great time in London, where she is currently studying Civil Engineering. The study is complicated, but it is going well, she said. "I am now in my exams, so I am starting to find out what I am learning there," said nineteen-year-old Alexia laughing. "No, just kidding. But it is going well."

The princess, who is studying at University College, calls her study "tough". "But in between studying I can also discover the huge city of London a bit and I'm really enjoying it," said Alexia, who doesn't yet know what her grades will be. "We'll see."
