It’s a girl! 79 years ago, Princess Margriet of the Dutch royal family was born in Ottawa during the Second World War.
After Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the Dutch royal family was forced to flee the country to escape the fighting. Some came to Canada, where they were welcomed with open arms.
On this day in 1943, Princess Margriet was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in a small section that was temporarily declared international territory by the Canadian government. This ensured she would have only Dutch – and not Canadian – citizenship, allowing the young princess to retain her place in the line of succession.

A tweet by Pieter van Vollenhoven:

Ik heb gisteren even geoefend op de uitvoering van de "regendans"! Niet te geloven..vandaag 19 graden en met regenbuien! Ook de vogels vliegen weer! Soms geniet ik ook zéér van regen.......

Loosely translated as:

Yesterday I practiced the performance of the "rain dance"! Unbelievable..today 19 degrees and with rain showers! The birds are flying again! Sometimes I really enjoy rain.......

Oh yeah, yesterday there was rather heavy rain showers over here. Had several colleagues, family and such who hoped the rain would hold. Just because a huge part of the Dutch soil/ ground (especially in the east and south) is too dry.
