If this isnít allowed, just let me know.

My coworkers and I were talking about how difficult divorces are and eventually got on the topic of Royal divorces, pre-nups, and post-nups...

That made me wonder what does happen when royals divorce? I know the spouse will get housing and likely joint custody but I wanted to pick your brains about the topic

I think it falls under it depends.

It depends on the royal house...
It depends on where they are in the line of succession...
It depends on how long they were married...
It depends on if they have kids...
It depends on how much the spouses talk to the press...
It depends on many things.

There are many variables to consider, no one answer fits all.

It's not that they're not allowed but that they're not legally binding...but...in 2010 the first prenup was upheld in UK court (Radmacher v. Granatino)...and since then they are more likely to be considered and possibly upheld.

https://www.simpsonmillar...-nup-post-nup-agreements/

Quote
Generally, the Court will look at the intention of the couple entering into an agreement and will consider the following:

  • Did you or your partner seek independent legal advice when making the agreement?
  • Were you or your partner under pressure to sign the agreement?
  • Did you both provide financial disclosure of your assets?
  • Did the person who had the most to lose understand the terms of the agreement?
  • Would it be unfair if the agreement was upheld?

It would certainly behove UK based royals to still seek legal advice.

Lady Davina Windsor and her husband Gary Lewis were divorced in 2018 after fourteen years of marriage. She and Gary lived in Auckland for some time during their marriage and lead a low-key life.

In almost all royal families, both reigning as non-reigning (anymore) divorce happened. And in various cases the final divorce didn't happen, often based on religious, legal or related issues, but was a couple separated.

In the Dutch royal family 2 relative recent divorces were those of Bee's younger sisters Irene and Christina. Irene was married to now deceased prince Carlos Hugo de Bourbon-Parma from 1964 till 1981 (when the divorce came through). Apparently there was a click between Carlos Hugo and his family in law, even after divorce, as he was still seen at public and private events of the Dutch royals.

Christina was married to Cuban exile Jorge Pťrez y Guillermo from 1975 till 1996. After the divorce in April 1996, Jorge disappeared largely and relatively quickly from the royal scene. And there were some messy rumors about him treating Christina badly through their marriage and him being possibly gay.

Let say both sisters had a divorce, but how it went during the divorce and afterwards were really different.

Like with most divorces, they depend also on the type of marriage and the People.
We have seen private, decent and discreet divorces, perhaps not entirely amicable but mature for the most part with People whose entire life and perhaps marriage had been more decent and mature and who had stayed out of the lime light.
And then we have the exhibitionists: those who willingly or purposely courted the media attention.
We have had those that lived on the fringes of royal slurupson and who managed to keep the conditions of the divorce a secret and we have had those who basically live in the public feeding trough and fight to stay there.
