The only people who really know what happened that night are those present.  Amber wasn't one of them.

Beatrice was but she was interestingly cut off.  I'm guessing if ANYONE has the dirt, it's her.  She's stayed quiet for 20 years.

For a more accurate story about how these two met and developed their relationship: here is an article from March 2003.

https://www.smh.com.au/ar.../03/07/1046826529873.html

Ah the article with the famous "big boned" comment. The article that may have started her obsessive dieting

Wow, three unnecessary references to weight! It doesn’t take much sometimes to push people to be obsessive. Wasn’t it one comment that pushed Karen Carpenter over the edge?

Karen Carpenter had a very controlling mother, and I think her anorexia was an attempt to take some measure of control over herself. That is a very sad story, and remarks like that are cruel.  I’m sure they would hurt Mary’s feelings, but I don’t see the same softness of will or desire to please others. Mary doesn’t seem to care for anyone other than herself.

IIRC, Mary has little to no REAL dirt on her - made her a good candidate for QMII to impose on Fred.

Mary's 'dirt' is that she was gold digging. She pretended to be something she wasn't, so that Frodo would take the bait.  She wouldn't be the first.  She won't be the last.  Who else remembers nana's letters that she unceremoniously tossed out with her utility bills, once Frodo bit.

Compared to the skeletons we find hiding in closets in 2020, hers is hardly a mortal sin.

That article needed a proofreader. I’m embarrassed that they would run it like that with so many sloppy errors.

They got one thing right though-Mosh did indeed enroll in Starmakers right after meeting Fred.

Her housemate was a sex industry advocate. That got buried!

While Mary may not have had anything truly scandalous in her closet, she was ill-qualified for the role for which QM accepted her.
Usually to marry into that level of society, one should be rich (like MC Miller) or accomplished (like Letizia or Rhym of Jordan). If not, and you're just an average person, you should at least be polished, well-mannered, and cultured.

Well, Mary was neither rich nor professionally accomplished so she tried to be polished and cultured. Didn't Henrik lament that Mary wasn't cultured?
So she put on airs creating a story around growing up among the horsey set, being a lawyer, trying to look the part by overspending on designer clothes without any sense of personal style, taking expensive holidays to Swiss resorts and St. Tropez. And her family played along with her sisters making public appearances as if they were royal, and her parents inserting themselves into Danish high society. Trouble is in this age of the internet, we can easily see that Mary's narrative is all fake.

She might have been more endearing if she didn't try to fake everything and just been herself as lacking as she was. Mette-Marit comes to mind as someone who hasn't tried to be someone she isn't.

I first heard that they knew that royalty was going to be present at the Slip Inn that night in 2002 ... when in Copenhagen as my tour guide said is was common knowledge that the royals went there during the Olympics and so Mary and her friends went there ... as did many other people in Sydney during the Olympics.

I don't know why Amber Petty would be thinking this is a big 'reveal' now when it has been in every story I have read about Fred and Mary's meeting for the past 18 years.

Since posting the above I remembered an incident from the Olympics ... my brother owned the license on a tavern a few blocks from the Slip Inn (about 10 - 15 minutes walk) and someone asked him was he jealous of the Slip Inn getting the royals in there and he said he wasn't as so many of the patrons were there just to gawk at the royals. At the table next to us was a group of young girls who left after that ... now did they go to see the 'royals' I have no idea but it was being openly discussed in parts of Sydney that that is where the royals went. I don't remember any names being mentioned just that 'the royals' went there.

Not completely new news, but it was always reposrted as "sources said" - there was no name attached to it really, so when a close person to Yrma/former close person to Yrma spills the beans personally, and is quoted, it is BIG news.

Mary's gold digging looks positively quaint now, by some comparisons.

It's fun to see newer dishers get up to speed. I remember tuning in during their romance. Filipe must have been so glad he didn't engage with her. I think Haakon might have been in Sydney at the time, too.
