Depression is a serious illness that can't be comprehended with rational thoughts. That makes it a very incidious disease. Neither money, fame, faith, ... can prevent you from becoming one of its victims. This death is a good example for it.
He was rich, successful, had a lovely wife, the best connections, faith ... all the basic incrediences for success and happiness. It just shows what the impact of depression can be.

It's an unspeakable tragedy. The depth of his despair must have been so deep that he saw no other solution. My heart goes out to his lovely wife and family.

I wonder if T was suffering from PTSD but it was not diagnosed?
G
That's a very good point Geta. Our nephew has PTSD and was handling it, but recently took a sharp turn for the worse. He is getting help but is still very bad off. The police have taken custody of his weapons thank heavens. Depression along with PTSD would put Thomas in a very dark place indeed. I wonder if moving house and the prospect of starting a family might have triggered things. I say this because our nephew's downturn accompanied a large geographical move.

It doesn't matter how old you get, buying snacks for a road trip should always look like an unsupervised 9-year-old was given $100. Anonymous

PTSD might have been a reason for his depression since he was in Iraq and the events from that time might still haunting him. But there is help, as you stated, and weapons should have been kept away from him, although sadly to say if a person wants to take his own life there are other possibilties.
I cannot imagine that starting a family, Ella being 42 by now, would have caused the problem. They had been married for almost 5 years , discussions about wanting to have children or not would have been settled long ago, never ever would just that fact, moving to a bigger house and starting a family cause somebody to take his own life.

LL I am sorry about your nephew. I know too well about PTSD. too well. If he was like someone I know who showed no syptoms of it no one really knew until they did wot T did then it all came unravelled. they were masking it with sleeping tablets and other stuff. and kept a tight lid on it all. anything can trigger it. To me T had all the hallmarks of it. I have recently finished reading this book: https://nypost.com/2019/0...areness-of-ptsd-has-died/I cried through it. such a clever intelligent man. wot a great loss. G

Perhaps could the heading for this section be changed or maybe a new one split off? It seems rather sad to go to a listing for her engagement in order to read about her husband's suicide.

How will an event like this be explained to the nephews and nieces of Thomas?

As they are still so young, I'd say they will be told Uncle Thomas has died. No details.

I'm glad they were able to have a private funeral. London makes sense as that was were Thomas lived and worked. Good on Charles/TBTP for stepping up and authorizing the use of The Chapel Royal.

According to news reports, his coffin had rested in Kensington Palace Chapel prior to the Service. The family accompanied the coffin the Chapel Royal at St James Palace where they held a service with 140 guests. The reception was held at St James Palace. There was a private cremation and his burial details were not disclosed. There will be a larger memorial service held in the future.
