Ooh clever Sophie - get there early before everyone else arrives and get HM and her ear to yourself. She would have survived the Tudor courts, that one 😆

It should not be forgotten that Sophie's career was in PR.  We only hear about the time she made indiscreet comments when she was conned by an investigative journalist posing as a Middle-Eastern businessman, but she ran a successful PR business in partnership for five years.  This is a woman with a proven track record in the PR business and in learning from her mistakes.  She knows how to look after her own interests, and should not be underestimated.

She has the kind of smarts I wish all married ins had.  She can teach a class on how to ingratiate yourself, promote your self with the top dog and protect your and your branch's interests without coming off as an overbearing, disingenuous and supercilious cow.

A new duchess and a certain Snake should take notes.

The Edwards could very well be going up a rank soonish, but Sophie is smart to ensure her line received the benefit of the Queen's largess now and in the will because she knows what is coming when Charles takes the throne. Its far smarter than the petulant brat approach a la Andrew. And hey, maybe she really likes the Queen and vice versa Smiley

Isn't the Queen genuinely fond of Sophie? I know her widowed father is invited to Sandringham and other things for the holidays and whatnot regularly.

Who wouldn't like Sophie, though!

Certainly they appear that close that there must be some affection or both are exceptionally good actors, which given HM does not act like that with others makes it almost certain she has some affection for Sophie.

I want to be her BFF! In video and pictures, Sophie and HM seem to have a genuine affection for each other. The queen probably appreciates that she's low key and does her job and there were never rumors of her trying to distance Ed from the rest of the family.  Yes, she did have a little bit of a rough start, but after that she was golden. Since her own mother has passed, she may look at her as a mother figure.

^ I wondered about that; then I learned she was wearing a lime-green dress beneath the coat, so I think there may be some reflected colour there Smiley

Prince Philip, 97, gives up driving licence

The Duke of Edinburgh is to voluntarily give up his driving licence, Buckingham Palace has said.

It comes after the 97-year-old duke apologised over a car crash near the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, in which his Land Rover Freelander landed on its side after a collision with a Kia.

Two days later Norfolk Police gave him "suitable words of advice" after he was pictured driving without a seat belt.

Buckingham Palace said that he surrendered his licence on Saturday.

In a statement, the palace said: "After careful consideration the Duke of Edinburgh has taken the decision to voluntarily surrender his driving licence."

The duke wrote to a woman injured in the crash, which happened on 17 January on the A149 near the Queen's country estate.

He escaped injury, but Emma Fairweather, a passenger in the Kia, broke her wrist.
