Laughing This is so ridiculous. But apparently, the predident of the united states only values us as a nation (and ally) if he thinks weíre capable of selling him another country. We canít sell him Greenland just like we canít sell him France or Argentina. Itís not ours to sell. Not that we would, though, if we could. The Greenlanders have massive social problems as it is. They donít need Trump on top of things.

Itís all so odd. Itís quite something to cancel at such short notice, I do sympathize with all the people who have been working so hard behind the scenes to organize a state visit as itís a huge undertaking.

I do too. However just think of the positive effects: The security alone would've been huge and expensive.

.

Indeed... the Danes are better off without the visit

Which is terrible because right after 911 who is the first country that came to help us with fighter jets -Denmark -and the fighter jets were out of Greenland , I believe
Denmark has always stood with us as a strong ally and itís embarrassing to have such a crappy president right now. So sorry Denmark we obviously donít all  think like our crazy president

You are right, cordtx.  The US owes the Danes so very much from those terrible days and Iím genuinely ashamed that the leader of our country is behaving so very badly toward a great country.

On the other hand, Iím sure there is a great sigh of relief from many quarters about this.  Perhaps the preparations that have been made can be continued in a different format, such as a wonderful street party honoring the great spirit of the Danish people, held in the capital.  Iíd come to that!

  Thumb up

Please believe I'm really, really sorry and embarrassed, deeply mortified and ashamed.  But JMO the Danes dodged a bullet.  I suspect he was planning on doing what he always does, come in lumbering like Bigfoot, cause a crisis, sow chaos and then claim he fixed it.  His coming would have provided all kinds of headaches and trouble.  I imagine the whole family is breathing a sigh of relief not having to smile and play nice.

Even people who I know are Trump supporters (unlike myself) are horrified. But they probably won't change, er, allegiance, so to speak.

https://nos.nl/artikel/22...-om-trumps-afzegging.html

A quick translation by use of Google translate:

Danish Prime Minister 'disappointed and surprised' for Trump's cancellation

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is "disappointed and surprised" about President Trump's decision to cancel his visit to Denmark. The American president said via Twitter that he does not want to come anymore, because the Danes do not want to sell Greenland to the US.

According to Frederiksen, Trump is still welcome. "The invitation for stronger strategic cooperation with Americans in the Arctic is open." She said she was looking forward to the visit that would take place at the beginning of September.

Last weekend it turned out that Trump had talked to his advisors about the plan to buy Greenland. The island has an autonomous status within the Danish kingdom.

"A little amateurish"

Prime Minister Frederiksen called the idea "absurd" and emphasized that Greenland is not for sale. "Being so direct has saved the Prime Minister a lot of time and effort for Denmark and the United States. I am grateful to her for that," Trump said on Twitter.

Other politicians in Denmark are also surprised by Trump's message. "Even for Donald Trump's standards, it's surprising to cancel something as important as a state visit in such a short term," said Finance Minister Kristian Jensen.

"It is always interesting to follow Trump," says the leader of the Liberal Alliance, Alex Vanopslagh. "It's quite remarkable that you want to buy a part of Denmark and then say on Twitter that you don't want to visit anymore, because we reject your request. A bit amateurish."

Other politicians are less interested in the decision, such as Karsten HÝnge of the Socialist People's Party. "We will no longer be surprised when it comes to the spoiled child who is now president of the US. It is what it is and we must move on."

The conservative Naser Khader is particularly sorry that Trump is no longer coming. "We have a lot to discuss with the Americans about the Arctic. It is important that they take a step, otherwise the Russians and the Chinese lurk."

But according to Prime Minister Frederiksen, canceling the visit does not mean that anything will change in the relationship between Copenhagen and Washington. "We are not in a crisis," she said. "This does not have to affect other things."

Every administration is temporary - they know this.

It's just so terribly embarrassing and I am sure no one was consulted before the tweet went out.

Sorry Denmark.

I heard about the offer. I honestly thought it was a bad joke. Obviously not. To this day he does not even realize what a slap it was to Denmark. I sincerely hope he has no power/possibility to organize some controversial status referendum in Greenland!!

Like Ellie said, thankfully every administration is temporary! At least in most countries.

PS: and another thing - by cancelling the state visit Mary has no oppurtunity to wear her gala dress and tiara. Darn.

I assumed it was serious but not serious enough to call off a state visit. I hope if/when it's rescheduled, it's on a much smaller scale and there's no state dinner.
