What a great day with old acquaintances and loved ones! Princess Sofia took the opportunity to show up a day earlier to meet mom and dad ahead of the official visit on Friday.
When the students showed up and sang the song "Welcome Home", the princess became so touched that tears began to roll.
"It's emotional," says Princess Sofia.
As Sofia entered the newly built main building, she waved happily to the students gathered. Some of the children gave her flowers and got hugs from the princess.
Mom Marie and dad Erik are there and Sofia smiled as she passed them.
- My kids have gone to this school, all three of them. But not this one, but the old building, says Marie Hellqvist.
She also says that Sofia arrived already on Thursday evening.
Shortly after arriving, it was time for lunch in the school dining room. "It's not even a school dining room anymore, this looks like a restaurant," said Sofia, who asked for vegetarian meat to her tacos.
The day is not only special for the residents of Älvdalen - but also for Princess Sofia herself.
- It feels good and exciting. Here are some old teachers, children of old friends. Also some of my old classmates who have become teachers themselves. It feels emotional, Princess Sofia says.
- The school itself looks very different. The school I attended is demolished from the ground, so they have built a whole new school. It is absolutely amazing that they invested in this. It says so much about both the municipality and the effort they want to make for young people. I'm proud!
One of those in attendance for the inauguration is Ann Nilsson, who was Sofia's math teacher in middle school. She got a big hug from Sofia and is obviously moved when she talks about her old student.
- I have very positive memories of Sofia. She was good. She was shy, but she made up for it later and came into her own. She is an amazing ambassador for Älvdalen.
