At the age of about 64 the infamous Belgian king Leopold II had a very young mistress (ca. 17 years old). He bought a villa for her in the south of France, near Nice. Recently Campari, the firm which owned the villa since 2016, has sold the villa

I've read a lot about Leopold II, because he was the father of Austria's last Crownprincess.

He must've been a horrible man.

He was actually, his own wife hated him, Marie Henriette had a very difficult relationship both with him, and their children. She considered them a result of something she abhorred. After their only son's death, they tried, most reluctantly, one last pregnancy that resulted in yet another girl. After that, they never shared a roof again. Leopold II is figure that is very difficult to reconcile, since there are almost none aspect of his life that might appeal to us.  Thumb down

I'm just happy that at least two of his daughters did have happy marriages later on.

MH was another victim of a failed marriage policy. She was a lively young girl, while growing up in Hungary, freepirited and all and ended up a bitter old woman.

Didn't Clementine wait with her marriage to one of the  Bonapartes after both her parents died?

Yes, her father forbid her to marry him and told her he would disinherit her (well he did anyway).

Curiously Clementine was his favourite daughter. I mean despite the fact that he wanted another son at the time of her birth.

He bullied his whole family, and was really jelous of his brother's family, he had had his 2 heirs, he had none. But he was a horrible human being so it's really difficult to pity him.  Secret

The Belgian Newssite VRTNews did a whole series on "The Sisters of the King", all 10 of them, this summer:

https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws...-de-zussen-van-de-koning/

All in Dutch I'm afraid (They sometimes throw in some Flemish words and expressions though - like "Kakenestje" : that's the youngest of the children), but if you feed it through Google Translate it should come out readable in your own language.

If you haven't already done so you should read the autobiography of Stephanie's sister Louise (My Own Affairs, 1921). Louise's father conspired to kidnap her and send her to an insane asylum for years because she wanted to marry a commoner. He was a despicable man, may he burn in Hell.

Wasn't she, Louise, forced to marry a Saxe-Coburg-Gotha cousin and had a miserable marriage. If I remember it correct daddy dearest was on the hubby side and after scandals contact between Louise and her younger sisters were limited and or forbidden

Yes, she was forced to marry Philipp of SCG very much against her will. She spent her wedding night sleeping in the castle's conservancy after she ran into the grounds desperate to escape. Phillip apparently had some 'interesting collections' and, being 14 years older than her and a male, was very worldly wise which didn't mesh well with a delicate 17 year old's idea of romantic love. And since her father was plenty worldly wise he would have known this and inflicted the marriage on her anyway.
