I've read a lot about Leopold II, because he was the father of Austria's last Crownprincess.
He must've been a horrible man.
If you haven't already done so you should read the autobiography of Stephanie's sister Louise (My Own Affairs, 1921). Louise's father conspired to kidnap her and send her to an insane asylum for years because she wanted to marry a commoner. He was a despicable man, may he burn in Hell. Yes, I know it. Louise was apparently saved by her lover, Geza Mattahich, but she died totally broken. |

Yes, her son met a horrible death. Her daughter was married off to Empress Auguste Viktorias brother and didn't have it easy either. |

Didn't Clementine wait with her marriage to one of the Bonapartes after both her parents died?
Yes, her father forbid her to marry him and told her he would disinherit her (well he did anyway). He was really bullying his 3 daughters.... Curiously Clementine was his favourite daughter. I mean despite the fact that he wanted another son at the time of her birth. Thanks for the article. |

I've read a lot about Leopold II, because he was the father of Austria's last Crownprincess.
He must've been a horrible man.
If you haven't already done so you should read the autobiography of Stephanie's sister Louise (My Own Affairs, 1921). Louise's father conspired to kidnap her and send her to an insane asylum for years because she wanted to marry a commoner. He was a despicable man, may he burn in Hell. Her husband was debauched even by 19th century standards, he was already into pornography back then, and there are records of the sexual practices he liked. There are two stories: 1. She ran away of the bedroom on their first night together when he tried something abominable with her, she was a virgin. And was found crying on the park. 2. Same, she was found on the park, crying, in her nightgown but on the morning after the ordeal. Poor woman.  Wasn't she, Louise, forced to marry a Saxe-Coburg-Gotha cousin and had a miserable marriage. The jewels she commissioned are frankly awful, in this case, it was their parents' idea so she cannot be blamed, however: - She chose to dismantle the Nizam de Hiderabad bandeau to make that ugly thing with rubies. - And the winner, the aquamarines, that tiara... words fail me. It's even uncomfortable to look. The stones are to die for, the necklace was well done but that thing she asked, really hideous.  |

Once every few months someone brings this up and I will never be over how ugly that tiara is and how beautiful the original was. I know, that post in OoS' blog has a lot of sad remarks on that regard, frankly, I don't get her taste in jewels. Leaving this crime aside, I believe the worst lost to the Windsors' vault are the Cambridge's sapphires and Alexandra's "Rundell" tiara, I know it wasn't actually commissioned by them but it is known as such. At least, George V inherited the rest of the parure. I like the sapphire tiara but the Burmese ruby tiara is an abomination against jewellery.
