Prince George and Princess Mary were thrown together in late February of 1892, when Bertie and Alexandra invited Mary to join them as the original wedding date between Mary and Prince Albert Victor approached. The Duke of Devonshire had offered Bertie the use of his country house, Compton Place in East Sussex. Bertie and Alexandra gave Princess Mary the wedding gift which had been intended for her as the spouse of Prince Eddy: a brilliant riviere of diamonds.
