You could get sweet, quiet, unassuming grandmas...

Mette Marit's mom, here with Sonja

Sonja's mom, with her daughter's portrait

...or greedy nutcases...

MM's dad, who sold photos of her to the press and had an interesting romantic life

...or you could have THE DONALDSONS!!! Nerves

Margrethe had some interesting in-laws.  If we can trust wikipedia, Henrik was not legitimately conceived.  His mother Renee was married in a civil ceremony in September 1928, but there was no religious ceremony.  She and her first husband legally divorced in 1940 (when Henrik was 6).  This husband was not Henrik's father - at least supposedly.  Henrik was conceived around September 1933, and his parents were married in a religious ceremony in January 1934, five months before his birth.  They did not marry civilly untill 1948 (which I guess makes sense - for the first 6 years of their marriage, Renee was legally married to someone else). Crazy

I've read that Henrik's father never liked Margrethe, mostly because Henrik was supposed to marry a good French Catholic girl, not a Danish Lutheran, and have lots of kids who would carry on the family name.  Margrethe and Renee are supposed to have gotten along all right.  Here's Renee at Margrethe and Henrik's 25th anniversary dinner, wearing a tiara borrowed from her daughter-in-law:

Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was Queen Victoria of England's mother-in-law.

How well did Empress Alexandra of Russia get along with her mother-in-law Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna?
Did Marie Feodorovna cling to her status as Empress?
Did Marie have an obligation to Alexandra to assist her in her transition?

There are some very thorough biographies of both ladies that answer your questions.  Do you have a good library near-by?  I tend to buy only a few royal biographies unless they're very good and/or well-reviewed or unusual people.  Like, I ordered the biography of Queen Victoria's father, and it turned out to be reprint/facsimile of a 19th century book.  Not quite what I expected, but worth it in the end.

This video has an excellent narration about how Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra of England got along with their similarities and differences.
