Iris van Herpen (June 5, 1984) is a Dutch fashion designer.

Van Herpen studied to become a fashion designer at ArtEZ Academy for the Visual Arts Arnhem in Arnhem. During her studies she interned with Alexander McQueen in London and Claudy Jongstra in Amsterdam. After graduating, she designed shoes for United Nude, among other things. In 2007 she started her own fashion label. She describes her work as fashion where normal rules do not apply and a combination of craftsmanship and innovative techniques.

Van Herpen showed her collections during the Amsterdam International Fashion Week (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010), the London Fashion Week (2009 and 2010) and the Paris Haute Couture week (2011, 2012 and 2013). Her designs won she won several prizes, including two Dutch Design Awards in 2009 and 2010 and a Mercedes-Benz Dutch Fashion Award in 2010. In 2011, the 3D dress she designed was named one of the fifty best inventions of the year by TIME Magazine. That same year, Van Herpen joined the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.


On April 1, 2015 she was appointed member of the Academy of Arts. She was awarded the Johannes Vermeer Prize in 2017.

In 2018 she was nominated as Artist of the Year.

Iris van Herpen researches and experiments with both old and the most current techniques and materials. A recurring theme in her designs is the combination of innovative technology and old crafts. Van Herpen is the first fashion designer to use 3D printing technology in her designs. For innovation, she conducts research into the effect of different materials and enters into interdisciplinary collaborations to design her collections. She collaborated with choreographer and dancer Nanine Linning, visual artist and designer Bart Hess, architect Daniel Widrig, Benthem Crouwel Architects, milliner Stephen Jones, milliner Irene Bussemaker, shoe brand United Nude, architect Isaïe Bloch, filmmaker Zach Gold, graphic designer Tara, among others. Dougans, singer Joey Yung, architect Julia Koerner, jewelry designer Heaven Tanudiredja, Swarovski, director and filmmaker Joost Vandebrug, performance artist Marina Abramovic, choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, choreographer Damien Jalet and artist Peter Gentenaar.

The singer Björk has worn dresses from several collections by Iris van Herpen. For example, one of the dresses from the Radiation Invasion collection was worn on the cover and during the music video of her album Biophilia. The photographers of this album cover are Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, they also directed the music video for the song "Moon" on the same album. Furthermore, Björk also wore dresses by Iris van Herpen during concerts in 2012 (Roskilde; NY Hall of Science; Biophilia concert in Iceland).

Singer Lady Gaga and artist and style icon Daphne Guinness have also worn dresses by Iris van Herpen
