That's a lovely initiative. In times of crisis it's better to work together.

153 radio stations in Europe simultaneously run You'll Never Walk Alone

Friday at 8:45 am 153 radio stations will simultaneously play the song You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers. The idea came from 3FM DJ Sander Hoogendoorn, who wants to emphasize solidarity during the corona crisis.

The initiative arose on Tuesday when Hoogendoorn called Jeroen Kijk in the Vegte of NPO Radio 2 in his own broadcast, who embraced the idea. Later other Dutch and foreign radio stations followed.

The music classic sounds simultaneously in 27 countries on Friday, according to a list that 3FM has published.

In addition to the Netherlands and Curašao, these are Luxembourg, Germany, Spain, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Bulgaria, Finland, Latvia, Slovakia, Romania, Georgia, Portugal, Poland, Turkey, Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, France, Cyprus. , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Norway, Slovenia and Italy.

You'll Never Walk Alone was written in 1945 by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for the musical Carousel. The song was covered several times after that. The Gerry and the Pacemakers version from 1963 is by far the best known version. The song was almost immediately embraced by Liverpool, the football club from the band's hometown.

Later it turned out that the music also caught on with other football supporters. For example, the song can now be heard at various Dutch clubs.

Of course Curašao is geographically not in Europe, but is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Within this Dutch news article a clip of the Dutch radio presenter Sander Hoogendoorn and some other radiostations (Latvia, Belgium, NL, Spain) during the moment:

Funny is the ending comment of Hoogendoorn:

"Wat een kort liedje eigenlijk"

(What a short song actually)

Lovely thought, apparently (Looking at the crowded parks here) everybody seems to take that very literally and figuratively.
