When Prince Carl of Denmark became King of Norway, do you think he made the Norwegian people happy by taking the name
Haakon
for his regnal name?

From everything I've read, the Norwegian people were thrilled that their new king took a very traditional Norwegian name.

I wonder how many Norwegian names Prince Charles (Carl) of Denmark considered before he chose Haakon.

I think maybe ``Haakon'' looks and sounds strange to English-speaking ears but it's not an uncommon name among Norwegians. And I even know some Norwegian-Americans who have this name and seem to like it.

Maud of Wales was the first Queen of Norway in over five centuries who was not also queen of Denmark or Sweden.

Princess Maud is said to have been the first British princess seen bicycling in public. Her grandmother Queen Victoria was not amused.
Was this a suitable activity for a young lady?

The first princess on a bicycle?
As a child, Maud was known to be a bundle of energy – despite her petite build. Quite the tomboy. She definitely gave the boys a run for their money.
Her nickname within the family was Harry, given to her by her mother Alexandra. A name that followed her into her adulthood.
But she was also shy, and reluctant to speak when outside the family circle. Her Royal Shyness, people called her.
Maud is said to have been the first British princess seen bicycling in public. Queen Victoria was not amused. Was this a suitable activity for a young lady?
The monarch was worried that Maud risked showing off her legs in the process. After all, these were Victorian times.
Maud is said to have replied: But grandmama, everybody knows that I have legs!

King Haakon VII's father went on to become the King of Denmark but this happened after Haakon (Prince Carl) was already sitting on the throne of Norway.

Norway's national museum has a great exhibition of her clothing. She was known for lacing VERY tightly, BTW. And I don't think she was very tall, so her clothing is on the small side.
