Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse and by Rhine with his family in 1912

EL seems to have been very likeable and a real family man. He was also a favourite uncle of the Russian children of his sister.

He never got over the death of his first daughter. I'm glad that he found someone again to have a family with after his distraous first marriage.

Luckily he didn't have to witness the death of his son and his family too.

It was actually the grandmother Queen Victoria who hoped that Ernest Louis would marry his first cousin, Princess Victoria Melita.

Yes, I know. And they were both very unhappy in that marriage and got divorced as soon as old Queen Vic was dead.

When his great-aunt Joanna died childless in 1406, Anthony of Burgundy inherited the Duchy of Brabant, Lothier, and Limburg.

Joanna, Duchess of Brabant (1322-1406) was a ruling Duchess of Brabant from 1355 until 1406. She was the heiress of John III, Duke of Brabant. Joanna was the first woman to be Duchess of Brabant in her own right.
