Didn't see this topic created yet (mods please merge if there already exists a thread on the Brazilians!) but has anyone heard about this?

Pedro Alberto, who is a nephew of the current pretender, had an engagement party in early March and at least 37 guests have been hospitalized with COVID. Recently, his fiancee's father died from it, and an elderly socialite who attended also died in late March. This article says the fiancee's maternal grandparents are also sick, and that Pedro Alberto's parents, Maritza and Alberto, and two uncles Francisco and Antonio (who are the three youngest brothers in a family of 12!!) were also infected. Antonio was the only one hospitalized but he recovered enough to be allowed to go home.

I don't know what restrictions were like in Brazil in early March, but I cannot imagine how these two must be feeling, wanting to celebrate with their families, and now the poor fiancee having to bury her father.

Indeed tragic.

An interesting family, which I try to keep up with once in a while.

They were also struck by the death of Prince Pedro Luiz of Orléans-Bragança, third in succession to the abolished throne of Brazil. He had dual Brazilian–Belgian citizenship. He was returning home to Luxembourg from a visit to his relatives in Rio de Janeiro. He was killed in the Air France Flight 447 crash in the Atlantic Ocean (the flight was going from Rio de Janeiro to Paris).

It was thanks to Empress Maria Leopoldina, the spouse of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, that the basic color scheme of the Brazilian flag, green and yellow, was chosen to illustrate the marriage of the Houses of Braganza and Hapsburg.
