Beautiful pieces. And is there anything the Dutch vaults are short of??
The terms crown jewels, national badges and regalia are often used side by side or interchangeably. But they denote different objects. Crown jewels is a concept that includes all kinds of jewels associated with royalty. Often people also speak of crown and scepter as crown jewels, but this is less correct. The crown jewels are a collection of jewelery that is associated with royalty. It can be diadems, rings, necklaces and brooches. It was often stated in wills that certain jewels could only be inherited by the reigning monarch. In a number of countries, including Sweden, it is stipulated that only the king and his wife may wear the jewelry. In other countries, use by other members of the Royal Family is also permitted. Denmark owns jewelry that may only be worn by the Queen.
The Dutch royal family has a large jewelery collection. In the Netherlands, the House of Orange-Nassau owns jewels that were first called "crown jewels" at the time of King Willem III in 1853. Previously, mention was made of family jewelry, house diamonds and house jewelry. Queen Anna Paulowna (née Grand Duchess of Russia) had it recorded that the jewelry she left to her eldest son "could only be worn by the queen". These collections were nevertheless distributed regularly and part of the historical jewelery ended up as inheritance or dowry in Sweden, Denmark, Prussia, Weimar and France (Louis XVII). A solution was sought to prevent further fragmentation of the collection through inheritance and sale. Establishing a Fideï commis is prohibited by law in the Netherlands and Queen Juliana realized that her jewelery collection should one day be shared by four. That is why in 1963 a foundation "Regalia van het Huis Oranje-Nassau" was established. In 1968 the Foundations "Crown Goods", "Crown Jewels" and "Regalia" were established.
Besides the jewels which are part of these foundations, many of the Dutch royal ladies have their own jewelry collection. The first ones stay in the Foundations and aren't sold, while others can be sold.
