not sure if this is in the right thread but where did Rainner make his money from and subsequently, Albert?

i think someone mentioned that Albert is a billionaire and it make me think, from what?

thx

Quote from an article around the time of Rainier's death:

"....Monaco's revenues have grown from 3 billion francs in 1970 ($543 million) to nearly 10 billion euros ($12.9 billion) in 2004. Along the way Prince Rainier bolstered his own fortune; Forbes estimates his personal net worth to have been at least $1.5 billion, comprised mostly of real estate (Forbes conservatively assumes that he and his family own approximately 10% of Monaco's acreage), art, stamps (he is one of the world's largest collectors) and profits from Monte Carlo's casino. The palace itself, which appears to belong to the Grimaldi royal family, is worth more than $500 million, according to Roger Munns, managing director of Monaco..."

Rainier also had a huge, extremely valuable  car collection. We are hoping to see it next year on our stop in Monaco next year https://www.nytimes.com/2...royal-car-collection.html

In that childhood photo, he looks like he has fallen down and split his lip. Poor little guy!

I always wondered what Grace really saw in him. I always thought he was one of those creepy minor royal hangers on, his big bucks notwithstanding. And the House of Grimaldi certainly lacked a sterling reputation. What's the phrase anyway, something about how Monaco is a sunny place for shady people?

it is by Somerset Maugham who quipped that "Monaco is a sunny place for shady people.”

According to one magazine, while still on the throne, Prince Rainier's grandfather Prince Louis II of Monaco exiled Rainier's father Prince Pierre from Monaco.

I never found Rainier to be particularly appealing. There was always a suggestion of a lothario about him.
