U.S. Army developing COVID vaccine for all variants, early trials encouraging https://www.nydailynews.c...vi5tgfv5gcdcty-story.htmlActual rollout is a year away at least. U.S. Army researchers have developed a vaccine designed to counter all coronavirus variants, but have yet to test it against omicron. Early human trials of the vaccine began in April and have been encouraging, scientists told military news outlet Defense One.
But after the news went viral Tuesday night, researchers at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Maryland clarified that the Army’s vaccine has not been tested against the omicron variant currently spreading quickly across the world. Large-scale phase 3 trials, the final clinical step before vaccine approval, have not even begun, according to Defense One.
The team at Walter Reed began working on the multifaceted vaccine in April 2020.
“We decided to take a look at the long game rather than just only focusing on the original emergence of SARS, and instead understand that viruses mutate,” Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, head of Walter Reed’s infectious disease team, told Defense One.
Omicron has spread so rapidly in part because of mutations to the virus’ spike protein. That protein is what leads to infections, which is why the initial vaccines targeted it — and why they’re less effective now. The Army’s vaccine was designed to be ready for any future mutations, prepared to adapt with 24 different faces on a soccer ball-shaped protein, Defense One reported. Testing took so long because the Army wanted to trial the vaccine people who were not vaccinated and had never caught COVID, and such people were tough to find, according to Defense One. The shot has not been tested in people who already got a Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johson shot, and it hasn’t been tested in people already infected with COVID. The vaccine, named the spike ferritin nanoparticle (SpFN) vaccine, also works against the initial SARS virus (SARS-CoV-1) that spread in the early 2000s, according to initial research. Scientists also hope it can protect against any coronaviruses discovered in the future. The exact timeline for the SpFN vaccine rollout remains unclear. Pfizer began phase 3 trials for its vaccine on July 27, 2020, and the first shots went into arms on Dec. 14, 2020.

Now if only ALL those people who have thus far refused to be vaccinated will do it. The rest of the world is held hostage to them.

Yesterday I received my booster shot - Pfizer. My main vaccination was 2 shots of AZ - this was at a time before AZ was decided to be unsuitable for my age group.
I reacted to the AZ - headache, chills/fever etc. for the first, exhaustion and deep sleep for the second. This time also a headache, a sore arm and a heavy but disturbed sleep. However today I am fine.

Yes indeed. The Gov called out the National Guard to assist the hospitals in the northern third of the state, and is looking to bring in out of state medical personnel too. That's how bad it is here right now. Which also means 1000 of the Guard are spending Christmas away from their families. Thanks to all the unvaccinated surgeries have been canceled, there is limited room for those having strokes, heart attacks etc, and should you need emergency medical care the ambulance might not take you to the nearest hospital. No room at the inn 2021 style.

I am the POA and Health Care Proxy for an older friend now in assisted living. He's been hospitalized 5 times for lengthy stretches for serious matters like a brain bleed and burr hole surgery in the last 6 months. This means I have to appear at the hospital at least every other day, as he has totally outlived all his family. I would not have set foot in a hospital once without being triple vaxxed. I point blank refused to have my next leg surgery until this is totally over.

I got my booster shot yesterday, my third with Moderna. Headache, chills, fever and tired today ! No midnight party for me this year... But with Omicron everywhere and record levels of cases in my country it was worth it - and also for the handsome firemen at the vaccination site

I got the Phizer booster about 3 weeks ago. I am honestly a bit freaked out about Omicron so it’s the safest choice IMO with record high numbers in Denmark. And lo and behold - an otherwise seemingly lady showed up at my brother’s Christmas lunch apparently waiting for her test result, that turned our to be positive.. thank God for vaccinations.

Had my booster scheduled for Dec 26. Then some idiot relative travelled abroad and lied about it. I would never allow a visit if I knew about the travel. He come to my house to leave some Christmas presents on the 21st and also left Covid as a bonus He was infected, and informed us on Dec 23. Chrstimas was cancelled, and on Dec 25 symptoms started. Did PCR test and everyone it the house was positive, including my 1 year old niece. It was horrible!! The headache, throatache and coughing are a beast that destroys you. And seeing a 1 year old baby fighling this thing was pure desperation. Only yesterday evening we started to feel better, the energy is still mostly out and everyone in the house is super tired. I have an history respiratory diseases, the doctor told me that being vaccinated was the deal breaker for not ending at an hospital and only get a mild version. If this was the mild Covid, damn! Get vaccinated people, please! I have the flu every year, this is not a flu

A long time family friend of ours passed away last week from covid pneumonia. He was in the hospital for almost six weeks. Refused to get vaccinated and mocked vaccines and mask rules. He was pretty well known in the community and they tried to pretend it wasn't covid but people found out and now he is gone. He was in his late 60s and not in the best health but never thought it would actually happen.

It seems like everyone, regardless of vax status is getting omicron. Luckily hospital numbers don’t seem to be following the same path so far, as Delta did. I think the northern US hospitals are still dealing with Delta as it started in the South and kicked our butts then moved its way North. I’m just hoping omicron doesn’t lead to large hospitalizations.
Thistle I’m sorry and hope you’re at the end of it and feel better!

We are still struggling in Canada, it isn't so much about a covid emergency anymore but a healthcare emergency. We don't have the critical care capacity and we have a lot of citizens with chronic disease.

Yesterday the Gov called out 1650 more of the Guard to assist i hospitals - that's on top of the 1000 that were called out just before Christmas. We are at overflow capacity in most hospitals, at least in the northern third of the state. It was never this bad here before, yes we had surges, but this latest variant comes on top of Delta, and has kicked butt and taken names. It will get worse before it gets better with people gathering for Christmas and New Years parties. I don't expect this will let up until the middle of January at the earliest. Both me and THotB are are vaccinated and have had the booster - but we're still being cautious.

Got my Pfizer booster yesterday; was a little tired the rest of the day, but that’s all (I had a slightly stronger reaction after the first 2 shots but wasn’t sick). Very glad to have gotten it done – although I live in an area (suburb north of Chicago) w/an extremely high vaccination rate and a mask mandate for all indoor public/commercial spaces, omicron is spreading here like crazy, incl. in my apt. bldg. Be safe and stay healthy, my friends.

There are more and more cases of people who despite being vaccinated and boostered have contracted Covid. Makes you really wonder just how effective it is.

But if I understand it the vaccine and booster do not prevent catching but they minimise the illness.
