There are more and more cases of people who despite being vaccinated and boostered have contracted Covid. Makes you really wonder just how effective it is.

It’s not, especially for Omicron. It is effective at reducing severity in most though.

Here is a snapshot breakdown of a hospital here. I’m still not trusting accurate reporting though. For instance if I go to the hospital for pancreatitis and while there have a positive Covid test are they counting that as a Covid hospitalization? They shouldn’t.

For what it's worth, I never assumed my vaccinations would stop Covid in it's tracks. Like the Flu vaccine it would result in a lesser, more moderate illness, and probably not require hospitalization.

Here's some cheery news from France . . . . .

https://wgntv.com/news/co...ant-discovered-in-france/

Quote
PARIS — A new COVID-19 variant has been discovered in France that researchers have named IHU.

Health officials said they found 12 people infected with this mutation living across southern France. The cases are being linked to travel to Cameroon.

Scientists have said the variant has 46 mutations compared to the first identified COVID-19 virus identified at the start of the pandemic.

The World Health Organization has not labeled the new strain as a variant under investigation or variant of concern.

It’s unknown if the variant is more contagious or dangerous than previous strains.

The variant has not been found in any other country.

But if I understand it the vaccine and booster do not prevent catching but they minimise the illness.
So far, I know 2 vaxxed and boosted people who currently have omicron. One is 88 (and frail) but she has very mild symptoms; the other is much younger and said she feels like she has the flu but is slowly getting better.

The Danish health authorities have said Phizer reduces the risk of infection with Omicron with 55% but significantly reduces the risk of a severe infection, hospitalisation and need of respiratory treatment. With the high number of infections, that’s nothing to sneeze at IMO, especially when hospitals are already strained.

Alas, a healthy double-vaxxed Australian man with no underlying health conditions has died in Sydney. You just never know!

No you don’t.. But statistics and facts are thankfully reliable and trustworthy to lean on over anecdotal evidence still. And doctors learn more and more about the illness so the treatment is a lot better now than it was in the beginning.

Statistics and such are as reliable as the people taking the statistics are.
Several states here have come under scrutiny after counting every patient in hospital of whom they didn't know the vaccination status as "unvaccinated". In medical respect this is understandable, if you don't know for sure it is better to err on the side of caution and treat the patients as a potential risk (or as being potentially at risk), however for statistics on how many vaccinated people vs unvaccinated patients are treated this simply sucks.
Also what irks is that here you do not get any information as to which covid strain you caught.
So your test comes in positive, all you get is "Covid positive" but then you wonder, if they establish the Covid strain either Delta or Omnikron or a new type for research and statistics, why would they not include this information on your note or for your personal knowledge?
My niece was sick, pretty sick even with bronchitis-like symptoms (possibly Delta) but also sinus and upper respiratory problems (possibly Omni), so it could have been the latter, but it also could have been the former with a regular cold bug piggybacking, which tbf is rather commonly happening in our cold rainy season. But would it not be useful to know, if she is now somewhat resistant to Omnikron or not?
Same happened with a friend.
Also they are discussing here that people working in certain "frontline" and essential professions should quarantine shorter than others, because we can ill afford them to stay on sick leave. But seriously, if it is safe enough for a nurse to go back to work after 5 days and not infect the most vulnerable in our society, it must certainly be safe enough for an office worker or a someone in one of the less essential fields.
It is discussions like this, that make people wonder if the governments really have a working plan....

In Denmark people get told which variation they have. I must say I trust our medical authorities well enough - it’s obvious when it’s political decisions and when it’s decisions made based on medical considerations. I don’t really trust our politicians anymore and I find it very depressing that the overall faith in science and medical professionals and authorities are being undermined by politicians using the situation to gain support to an agenda.

My sister is an md who has worked with corona patients since the beginning of the epidemic. I trust her judgment of the situation. It’s obvious to me that not just the vaccines but also the ways of treatment doctors have learned during the time has changed the situation. Depending on where you live of course and on how many are infected, it’s much more manageable than it was in the beginning. But all the messiness about how best to arrange society and what to do with new variations certainly throws many spanners in the works..

Late December 2021 I have received my booster shot, my 3rd Pfizer shot since mid June 2021.

The first vaccination left me with a stiff and painful arm and shoulder for a few days. Topping it off with a large bruise coming up. It seemed a vein or such had been hit during administering the shot.

The second vaccination was suprisingly easy and almost complaint free.

The third one resulted in a stiff and painful arm and shoulder again. Luckily without a bruise this time.

Recently I have heard more people who weren't feeling that well after their 3rd shot. Not ill, just not feeling comfertable/ normal.

In general in the Netherlands all people born in 1975 and earlier will receive Moderna as their 3rd shot (or 2nd if they have had Jansen before), while all people born after 1975 will receive Pfizer as their 3rd shot (or 2nd in case of Jansen). Off course there are sufficient exceptions to this rule.

Based on an event in the Netherlands we had a discussion how related institutes and the government could know how much was Delta, Omnikron or another variant of COVID. As already said by you, we also only get the news that we are COVID positive or not. Without mentioning the variant and such. While in news reports etc. they mention the amount of omnikron are raising (f.e. about 50% of the COVID postive cases in Amsterdam are Omnikron), including even numbers. Apparently they use statistics.

BTW the event was about a man calling the COVID helpdesk/helpline and asked how he could determine if it is Omnikron Delta or else when tested postive. In specific because of the differences between the variants with regard to spreading / symptoms / etc. The helpdesk indicated they couldn't. This conversation was put online.

Had my booster scheduled for Dec 26. Then some idiot relative travelled abroad and lied about it. I would never allow a visit if I knew about the travel. He come to my house to leave some Christmas presents on the 21st and also left Covid as a bonus  Dead  He was infected, and informed us on Dec 23. Chrstimas was cancelled, and on Dec 25 symptoms started. Did PCR test and everyone it the house was positive, including my 1 year old niece.

It was horrible!! The headache, throatache and coughing are a beast that destroys you. And seeing a 1 year old baby fighling this thing was pure desperation. Only yesterday evening we started to feel better, the energy is still mostly out and everyone in the house is super tired.

I have an history respiratory diseases, the doctor told me that being vaccinated was the deal breaker for not ending at an hospital and only get a mild version. If this was the mild Covid, damn! Get vaccinated people, please! I have the flu every year, this is not a flu No

It was a rough week, but no longer testing positive and most symptoms are out.

For the ones questioning the vaccine, it does not prevent you to have the disease especially the new variants. But significantly reduces the risk of severe covid and hospitalizations, and by proxy death. My story in particular: I have 2 shots of Pfizer and I was infected with Omicron. It was a rough and horrible week but manageble at home. The person that infected me is not vaccinated, also infected with Omicron and got much severe symptoms. It is still at the hospital, for almost two weeks.

I have chronic disease that can affect the lungs. That person is super healthy. Vaccines make the difference and I am glad that I took it.

Good to hear, I mean that it seems to be almost over.

Over time I have heard various people claim that there was no need for vaccinations as you could still get COVID (independant of the variant) when being vaccinated. Apparently in many of them we couldn't make clear that the symptoms and consequences will be less severe (in general) then when not being vaccinated and contract COVID. There will always be some exceptions or anecdotal stories.

Past Christmas I have visited my parents and my new inlaws, which resulted in travelling back and forth within the Neterlands. Just to be certain I have done a self test before going out.
