I think Jokke and Marie's fate will be the fate of many spares in future. The royal families will slim down to the absolute minimum and they will try to keep a low and conservative profile not to raise to many questions and too much criticism.

Frodo is a very weak clown prince. He seems to be nice and approachable. But that is about it. The question is if that really entitles him to be the head of the state. The postman in his area might be nice and approachable as well. Frodo does not work much, at times he is very unprofessionally dressed (wrinkles, clothes too small, hair totally in a mess) and very often you have no idea what he is doing. He seems forever like the high school diploma guy who forgot to study for an exam and tries and wins people over by being nice and charming.

Mary has more of a grip what is expected of her. But she is pretending too much. It is like someone who is the first time in an art museum pretending to understand what is going on. She is trying a bit harder (her clothes have more thought in them) but they are not leaving a signature anywhere. What is their passion? What are their visions for Denmark?

They are weak. The only hope is that Christian and Izzy are more sophisticated than their parents and start doing small engagements so that people will think "well, we have to endure King Frodo now, but at least Xian is doing a good job". I think they took Jokke and Marie out to avoid a sideline because they are -far from perfect- generally doing a better job.

In reality it does not matter what is the passion or vision of a king or a queen in a constitutional monarchy. It has no bearing.  They are figure heads only. They have no real power.

I beg to differ.

Royalty today, it is true have no political power. yes.

but they have 'soft power' social pull or power as it were.

these two Pi$$ weaks can use their position title to hightlight lot more causes

they could get involved in a lot more.

they do the bare minimum - and that's debatable for both

MEdiana, does not work. she gets dressed up in her latest purchase to pretend she is on a fashion run way

her langauage skills still dismal even to my non Danish ears.

I can pick too many English words in her ' Danish'

Nearly twenty years, and this is what she can show for it?

Floppy frodo does even less. he barely shows up.

so. no. these two do not even use the 'soft powwer' they do have as royals to contribute more to their country people's lived.

dismal failure both of them Dead

I understand and respect your point. But they can choose to do other things or they do what is given to them to do?

I think we have to be realistic - it does seem that even Daisy does less than some sovereigns (though I'm sure there's the whole "doing state work behind the scenes" for her) so I think there's either not the same focus on doing out and about duties and other royal houses or less duties to do. That means if we are comparing to other royal houses M&F may always appear to "fall short". But I think even if you look at Sweden for example, Victoria has a more professional way of doing things and has a few areas of focus that she works quite actively on and is clearly passionate about. Even Daniel ha his sports initiatives as a focus and seems to show up for more than Freds and Mary. It feels to me that we also see more of Vic at big important meetings, the UN etc.

Who knows maybe the successive Danish governments over the years have wanted M&F to stay hidden in the shadows not doing much and M&F have been fighting tooth and nail to do more. Somehow, I doubt it. But I can't see the government stopping them doing more in country if wanted. I mean look at them in Covid times - we practically got sick of seeing Victoria and Daniel huddled round the computer screen in that dining room with duck egg curtains behind them doing virtual events. M&F took themselves off to Chancellory House for the first time in years and took it as a prolonged holiday.

Hey, I'm not a Danish citizen so if they are happy with the effort M&F put in (which given they somehow always manage to get high popularity ratings it seems they do) I can't moan. But it is sad to see two people waste the platform they have.

I think the republican movement is a lot stronger in Sweden, and the royal family must be aware of that.
In Denmark, we are not quite at that point yet, so our royal family is probably not as aware of "danger", so to speak. My monarch is Daisy. When that era ends, we will see how Frederik handles it.

Thanks especially for the Danish perspective on things.

Re no real power. I would disagree her. Obviously they can't make decisions like a president. But they are public figures and they can give social causes a voice. With other royal families you have a clear agenda what they are promoting, e.g. Silvia/ Madeleine: Childhood, MM: reading (well, she could do better), Charles: environment, William: mental illness. There is -to my knowlege- no comparable pattern/ field of interest with the Danish Royal family.

Thanks Rainbow Unicorn for a Danish point of view.

I get that when they are getting approval ratings in the 80s for what they do now, why do more? I do think for us here on the board, it's too hard not to compare all royals to each other and when we do that M&F come out looking the poor relation but I guess if they are safe in their own country why bother doing more. Personally I'd like to think they want to do more, but maybe they are taking the view they'll have to do more when Fred becomes King so why do more now, but that said I take that when a couple have younger kids but their children are old enough to be left more (Christian is at boarding school for example).

I wonder if part of what makes them safe in Daisy's strong levels of approval, will there come a time when the Danish people get a bit fed up of their royals? I guess, unlike others where you can point to the good work and how hard working the royals are, Danish people may come to the view what substance is there. Relying solely on popularity is fine, but it means when you mess up there is nothing backing it up.

Has there been any recent word on the Freckled Gargoyles since they were busted on social media behaving like Eurotrash on the Danish taxpayer’s coin a few years ago?
