The anniversary message from Charlene was so cold. That marriage, IMHO, is over in all but name. By many accounts they have been leading separate lives for a while. She has apparently been in South Africa since January 2021 doing work with her foundation against rhino poaching.
She stayed on to attend King Zwelithini's funeral (March 2021) and apparently
couldn't fly back because of the ear infection (April-May 2021). If true, in fairness, she would have to get onto a plane to get to an ENT specialist in Europe - probably not a good idea with an ear infection. J&G joined their cousins for a safari earlier this month (June 2021) , with their respective parents. Charlene couldn't fly back home so Albert brought them to her. Only time will tell what happens next. Being away from J&G for so long must be taking its toll. Time and again she has shown that she adores children. That haircut is a cry for help. Did the latest paternity claim trigger the flight to Africa?
My theory: the additional
paternity revelations in the lead up to the wedding were a bridge too far for Charlene because the infidelity was during the period they were a couple. This article states that she attempted to flee THREE times before the wedding! https://www.dailymail.co....rt-ahead-anniversary.html
She was persuaded / convinced
to go ahead with the marriage. Her lack of fluency in French (this is not an excuse for it but a possible explanation) may have less to do with a lack of ability than the absence of incentive: the countdown to the day she left started on the day she married. She had to have been one of the most physically lovely (person+hair+gown) but emotionally miserable royal brides in recent times. I like Charlene. From the times I have heard her, albeit in English, she was fluent, warm, engaging and seemed very committed to the causes she supported in South Africa. However, she seems to be checked out of most things Monacan and looks miserable (bad form!) when doing any of it except those related to children or sport. She did speak about the terrible 2019 she had with the loss of friends dear to her and her father's illness.
Her philanthropy in South Africa: she has always maintained that it was a form of giving back. Simplistically, the BRF has a connection to all of the Commonwealth, the SRF to parts of the Americas, the Belgian RF to former Belgian Colonies in Africa, and Charlene to South Africa. She has done more good for especially kids of every hue and with far greater dignity than those who come to South Africa to use it as a backdrop for their pity parties. Charlene seems to be a negligent Monacan Royal but a wonderful Monacan ambassador to South Africa. She gets mentioned in regional newspapers in which only the BRF have a high enough profile to get a mention i.e. not interested in European royalty in general.
Some background on King Zwelithini and Charlene's attendance of his funeral:
KZ was the longest reigning Zulu Monarch and would have received a State Funeral but he passed away from COVID-19 related complications and pandemic restrictions are in place; Charlene could attend the funeral and was seated up front with the family because KZ is reported to have a considered her a daughter. This is a big deal
in South Africa considering our history.
EDIT: I have focused on her impact in South Africa but Charlene's reach is global:http://www.fondationprincessecharlene.mc/en/news
