I'm also curious about that. I thought every royal family was funded by tax payers.

A lot of it has to do with the arrangements they've made with the government.  The UK family as well as the Civil Service and the Military used to be funded by the Crown Estate, but George III made an arrangement that the government would get the lion's share (public costs) in return for an allowance for his own expenses.  Technically the British taxpayer doesn't really fund the official business of the Royal Family --the Crown Estate/Civil List revenues do.  Yes, yes, there are still some costs borne by the government (like security), but it's peanuts.

The Monaco situation is different.  It's a tax-haven, so no income tax to its citizens, but the head of state is a part-owner of the casino operating company.  So he makes bank.

Right? This board is full of so many knowledgeable people and they all have different areas of expertise.

I still think Cyril should write a book!

I don't like her military crop hair but trying to be fair to her, she is doing her own stuff.  Monaco is pretty much in the hands of Albert and their marriage is their own affair.  They are not accountable to tax payers (what tax payers?) and they can do as they like.  No one knows the reality of their marriage except them.

I don't know much about the workings of this country/family so I'm curious about the bolded part...are they self-funded?  Or do the residents of Monaco not really care what they do?

They are totally sel-funded.  Since 1869 Monaco residents do not pay income tax.  They also don't pay capital gains, wealth tax or property taxes.  It's a true fiscal paradise in the heart of Europe.  They gain their money from business who also don't pay taxes on dividends on local stocks.  Albert and their family can do what they want because no one wants to change the status quo - you need to be very wealthy to become a Monaco resident.

There is a wealth of information about Monaco fiscal policies on the net if anyone wants to find them.

Charlene will not be present in Monaco for her 10th wedding anniversary.

She issued a statement saying "she is currently undergoing multiple, complicated procedures after contracting a severe ear, nose, and throat infection in May, meaning she will not be able to travel back".

Charlene underwent her most recent operation yesterday, with her medical team advising she stays in her native South Africa while undergoing more procedures.

Quote
'This year will be the first time that I'm not with my husband on our anniversary in July, which is difficult, and it saddens me,' Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene said in a statement.
'However, Albert and I had no choice but to follow the medical team's instructions even though it is extremely difficult. He has been the most incredible support to me.
'My daily conversations with Albert and my children help immensely to keep my spirits up, but I miss being with them. It was special to have my family visit me in South Africa, and it was truly wonderful seeing them. I can't wait to be reunited with them'.

Too bad he can't afford to fly to see her  Roll Eyes on their anniversary.  I'm not buying this a bit.  As someone suggested, maybe the prenup required her to stay in for 10, that's done.

Also think it's strange the announcement was from her not the palace.  I don't believe their story, but if she is ill, hopefully she'll be better soon.  It's the scream for attention with that crazy hair that really makes me think, it's a big deal.

Any new information about the court case?

Plastic surgery just popped in my head but who knows. Hope she gets well soon from whatever it is.

Nothing about her story really adds up. It's clear there is so much more to this.

If she's ill I very much hope she recovers soon.

But there does seem to be a lot going on that we're not being told. During the time frame that she was first ill with the infection she was posting a lot of pictures of herself saving rhinos. They may have been a few weeks old at the time it's true but she's been in SA since March and was in no hurry to come back before the infection it seems.

She looks, IMO, absolutely awful in the photo in the Daily Mail article, the one from the "conservation trip", very thin & duck-lipped.  The hard haircut also does her no favors.

I feel sorry for her though.  I think she was - is - a very simple, ordinary woman caught up in an extraordinary circumstance (meeting & relationship with Albert) which has, aside from the lovely twins, brought her almost nothing but grief.   Plus, I think that Albert for all his outward bonhomie is probably somewhat stubborn & full of himself.

I don't really understand why Albert didn't marry the mother of Alexandre. He was with her for many years as an actual couple, if not openly.

Also wonder why Charlene stuck around for so many years before the wedding, if the rumors are true she tried to escape closer to the wedding.

I never really bought the “escape” situation. If she didn’t want to get married, she could have done several things if her “initial escape plan” didn’t work. But if she just doesn’t want to go back to Monaco, why did she release a press release herself that talked about how great Albert is. What I would do is make the trip to Monaco and do my surgeries there. But it is all quite murky.

I won't be shocked if there's an announcement in the coming months (if not weeks).  She chose to marry him, after a long relationship, so should have gone into her marriage with her eyes wide open.  When one considers the pressure on Albert to get on with it (get married and produce an heir) and Charlene's lack luster performance...well that certainly sounds like the prefect recipe for an arrangement.

The escape attempt story never made sense and I have a rather hard time believing that there's any truth to it.  If she didn't want to marry him they could/would/should have just called the whole thing off.  Heck I would have made a scene at the ceremony if it had come to it.

It's hard to believe that her condition is so serious that even a medical flight back to Monaco is too risky.
