Cyril, rode in a carriage-car behind a steam locomotive train more than once through the Rockies in the US. Mostly old track used to carry ore out of mines. Don't know which was scarier: the track hugging the mountain with a steep drop off on one side or the twists & turns taken by the narrow gauge train through steep changes in grade. Experiences that I have never forgotten - and would do again given the opportunity.

There are several fantastic heritage routes in Wales which take you by steam locomotive through beautiful mountain scenery. My favourite is the West Highland Railway, which travels between the harbour at Porthmadog and the castle town of Caernarvon

In the Netherlands there are still a few groups that are involved with steam locomotives and related. Several years ago I was allowed to take a ride in South Limburg. Where, as a result of an event, a lot of old railway material was present and in action.

Steam train Goes-Borsele
The steam train Goes-Borsele takes you on a nostalgic ride through the beautiful landscape of South Beveland (Province of Zeeland).

Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij
Where the regular train runs along the Veluwe, the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij takes you right through the woods and over the heath! Between Beekbergen and Dieren (Province of Gelderland) you can enjoy the beautiful nature of the Veluwe, with every now and then a beautiful view towards the IJssel. There the steam whistle sounds again, sign that there is a railway crossing coming. The heart of the museum is Museum Station Beekbergen with more than twenty steam locomotives, including giants of more than twenty meters. There are also old-fashioned water columns, semaphore signals and even a rolling coal crane.

Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik
Race the Hoorn-Medemblik Museum Steam Tram through the ancient landscape of the Province of North Holland. Listen to the cadence of the wheels and hear the steam hiss! You make the journey in one of the more than 100-year-old teak carriages that are stylishly furnished, exactly as it used to be. The journey goes past old station buildings and over historic bridges that still exist. The museum site in Hoorn, where you depart, is also an experience. Here you imagine yourself in 1926. Visit the historic steam tram station and buy a ticket at the wooden counter.

Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden
Enjoy the surroundings while the steam train Katwijk Leiden continues to boom on the narrow gauge railway between Wassenaar and Leiden (Province of South Holland). This track is a historical tour de force. But the museum itself is also worth a visit. You will see historic steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, among other things. All rescued from demolition just in time.

Museumspoorlijn STAR
Museum railway STAR, the longest museum railway in the Netherlands, is located between Veendam and Musselkanaal. There they already stoke the fire for a nostalgic ride of 26 kilometers along the border of the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

Museum Buurtspoorweg
From the moment you receive the cardboard train ticket from the station master, the adventure begins. You step back into the history of the Dutch local railways and go on a journey of discovery through Museum Buurtspoorweg. Visit the workshop and the goods shed and feel free to ask all your questions about the operation of the steam locomotive. The train runs between the station and museum in Haaksbergen and the tiny railway building in Boekelo (both in the province of Overijssel), where they have model railways and a wagon to play in. In between you travel through the beautiful landscape of the region Twente (east part of Overijssel).

Miljoenenlijn
Last, but certainly not least: the Miljoenenlijn in South Limburg. Perhaps the most beautiful railway in the Netherlands. The steam and historic diesel trains of the South Limburg Steam Train Company run on this special track through the hills between the stations of Schin op Geul, Simpelveld, Kerkrade and the German village of Vetschau. A tour with beautiful views, which you can admire sinking into the red plush. Border station Simpelveld is the main station of the South Limburg steam train company

My grandfather was a engineer - started out on steam locomotives and then diesels starting in the 30's. My favorite picture is of him is the cab of a steam locomotive.

The train above runs through the Cuyahoga valley National Park and should you have a hankering to ride they bring Nickel Plate Road Steam Locomotive No. 765 over from Ft. Wayne for Steam in the Valley in May.

Otherwise they have a fleet of diesel locomotives, several lovely club, dining and lounge cars on which they run the usual gamut of special occasion, wine tasting, murder mystery etc, excursions.

Their bread and butter comes from a regular circuit through the Valley. You can do round trip, or hike, bike or kayak as far as you like and then hop aboard the train at one of several stops - where they stow your gear in a baggage car and you ride back your starting point in a coach car. It still smells like the trains I rode when I was a child.  Smiley
