Princess Amalia passed her final exam cum laude

Amalia passed her final exam cum laude, according to the Government Information Service. The seventeen-year-old princess received the news on Thursday afternoon.

Someone has passed with honors if the average of the final grades is 8.0 or higher without rounding. It is not known with which figures Amalia succeeded.

Amalia attends the gymnasium at the Sorghvliet in The Hague and has previously stated that she considers the chance small that she would fail. She was in good shape, she said on King's Day.

"It's a lot of learning and blocking and in hopes of blessing that they ask questions I've learned." Her series of exams started with math.

The princess will not immediately start studying after the summer holidays. She first takes a gap year, during which she wants to travel. "I want to discover the world, do things that I may not be able to do in twenty years."

Princess Amalia passes her final exam cum laude

The backpack can be hoisted on the flag at Huis ten Bosch Palace! Princess Amalia graduated cum laude for her VWO final exam.

Princess Amalia has spent the past six years at the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet, a small-scale gymnasium in The Hague. She graduated cum laude, which means her average grade is above an 8.

Princess Amalia is not going to study right away. She skipped a school year and is now 17 years old. She therefore does not want to do further education immediately after completing her secondary education, but will first explore 'the wide world' for a year. She doesn't know exactly what she will do during that period. "It is mainly the thought of no school, but still learning, but not in the vein of school. Although I have enjoyed it over the past fourteen years," she said on King's Day. "I want to travel a bit, discover the world, do things that I might not be able to do in 20 years."

A new photo of the princess will follow later this afternoon, which will be shared via the Royal House.

RED: For your information, in the Netherlands it is customary to hoist the school bag together with the Dutch flag when passing secondary education. This is a typical Dutch custom that originates from the 1920's, in those times, going to study was a rare occurrence and only available to the wealthy. In the 1960's studying became more accessible to the general populace and thus going to study was something that was considered a sign of pride for the family, in those times not all people owned a flag, so they used to hang textbooks from their windows, later people hung their school bag from poles and this evolved into the flag post with a school bag.

The concept of world travel is denied to many... in Australia unless you are well connected you can’t leave the country.... perhaps working at home on humanitarian grounds would be a way to start her adult life

(a video of Amalia hoisting the flag can be found on the NOS website, see the link above)

Princess Amalia passed 'cum laude' for gymnasium graduation

Princess Amalia has passed her high school graduation. The eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima achieved an average mark higher than an 8, which means that she graduated cum laude ('with distinction').

On Twitter, the royal family has shared a video of the successful student raising the flag on top of Huis Ten Bosch, where the family lives. Amalia also congratulates all other graduates and wishes students good luck with any resits.

17-year-old Amalia, like her sisters Alexia and Ariane, attended the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague.

Online, many people share their congratulations to Amalia. Her uncle Pieter van Vollenhoven, among others, calls her cum laude diploma "a fantastic result". "Very warm congratulations!!!" he tweets. Education minister Slob also congratulates the princess on Twitter.

Exploring the wide world
During the celebration of King's Day in Eindhoven, the crown princess said she had no concrete plans yet for her further education. She wants to explore "the wide world" first. "I want to travel a bit, discover the world, do things that I might not be able to do in 20 years."

A total of 200,000 students took their final exams this year. Due to corona, the rules have been relaxed. This allows the students to repeat an extra subject and the resits are spread over a somewhat longer period.

I sympathize with Amalia because I felt the same way after finishing high school - I took a year off and just worked.   After twelve years of school the last thing I wanted was to get right back in for more.   Of course she won't have to "work" at a real job ... hopefully a gap year will do her good though.  She could travel around the Netherlands, involve herself in charities, shadow her father, etc.

It seems she doesn’t want to start collecting it until she starts working as a full time Royal.   Good for her!  And good decision in light of all that is going on in the world.

Good on her, not that she really had any other choice, but good on her for realizing that taking the allowance while still in school (or traveling the world) is inappropriate.  Consider the months of negative press around her allowance I had expected this to happen.

 Thumb up wise decision!

Nice photo of her, too.  Be interesting to see where she travels and what things she gets involved in during her gap year.  Also, where she’ll go for university and a course of study.  She’s moving into such a worldly position, always interesting to see what type of degree these heirs-in-waiting choose to study.

Wise move indeed. It gives her the freedom to do what she wants for a few more years. I am curious to see where the gap year will take her and what studies she will choose.

Me too. She seems like a lovely girl but it will be nice to get to know her outside the “3A” universe.

Well said Anastasia she gets to fly on her own now and we will see a real future queen I am sure. She is confident and smart so her parents must be proud. Very good that she does not want the money that shows an understanding of the optics of these things. Looking forward to getting to know her personality and interests as she puts her toes in the water of adulthood.

Was there talk of her attending that school in Wales that Leonor and Elisabeth are going to attend, or am I making that up?  I'm interested to see what she does on her gap year, and it seems a very wise move to decline the stipend.
