State visit to Norway is also about hydrogen, a new area of focus for the king

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima arrive in Norway this morning for a state visit. As in Germany last July, there is no trade delegation involved.

Before the outbreak of the corona virus, Willem-Alexander profiled himself as a king-merchant who is committed to Dutch trade interests. Due to the pandemic, the visit to Norway was postponed and there was no interest from the business community for a trade mission.

It's also a slightly less busy schedule than usual. King Harald of Norway is now 84 years old and had heart surgery last year and surgery on his knee not long after. He will host the first two days in Oslo, but on the third and final day, Crown Prince Haakon will take over from him. The state visit will then be moved to Trondheim.

The monarchy is very popular in Norway at the moment. Nearly eighty percent supports the royal family. In the Netherlands it is slightly less than sixty percent. "The king is approachable, they are very open and transparent," said royalty reporter Kristi Marie Skrede. "Recently I went to the musical Mamma Mia, and among the general public was also Queen Sonja with her grandchildren."

Climate change
On the first day it will be about climate change and what that means for the Arctic region of Norway, because that is where warming is the fastest. The ice mass in this polar region is decreasing, which has consequences for the indigenous people, the Sami. They see their habitat changing. The king and queen talk to Norwegian young people, including Sami, and Dutch students about the problems of global warming, but also about their ideas and opportunities for this northern part of the country.

On Thursday, the state visit will zoom in on energy transition, with a focus on wind energy and hydrogen. Little news about this can be expected during this visit, but it is an important subject for King Willem-Alexander: he has shifted his focus from water management, which he chose 25 years ago, to hydrogen.

The discussion will include topics such as 'energy hubs' at sea. These are a kind of energy islands, to which wind farms are connected and where hydrogen can be transported to the mainland via special pipes. Future music, but the first projects are in development.

Impressed
What King Willem-Alexander is perhaps most looking forward to is a visit to the Hr.Ms. Rotterdam. This Dutch naval vessel is moored in the harbor of Oslo. As a teenager, Willem-Alexander made a trip with marines in northern Norway. That made such an impression that he opted for the navy during his military service.

The participants of the state visit will reflect on the cooperation between the Netherlands and Norway, including the annual mountain and winter training sessions by marines that have been organized for 50 years. It remains to be seen whether the king will meet colleagues from then, but the Ministry of Defense cannot say for sure.

First Dubai, now Oslo: this is what the royal couple does during state and working visits

The agenda of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima in the last weeks of 2021 is full of state and working visits: the two are currently in Norway and were in Dubai last week. But why do they make these visits anyway? And what exactly are they doing there?

The royal couple are now in Norway for a state visit at the invitation of King Harald V. The state visit, which was actually planned for last year but was postponed due to the corona pandemic, revolves around climate change, cooperation, energy transition and sustainability.

According to the Government Information Service, a state visit is the highest visit that can take place between two countries. The purpose of a visit is to confirm and deepen the good relationship between the countries, to strengthen mutual understanding and to explore the possibilities for further cooperation.

The person who has been active as head of state for the shortest time first visits the country with a longer-serving head of state. After a state visit to a certain country, it is always the intention to also make a counter visit.

The king or royal couple is often accompanied during the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (currently this position is held by Ben Knapen), or another minister if the minister does not have time. Often a trade delegation is also accompanied, a group of companies that try to close deals in the relevant country.

Usually such a visit lasts two to three days. Since Willem-Alexander has been king, he has made more than twenty state visits - about three a year. In 2020 the calendar was empty due to the corona pandemic, but three are planned for this year, including an upcoming visit to Greece

Counter-performance of the king
The visit contains a few fixed parts. For example, the king or royal couple is welcomed with a welcome ceremony and a state banquet - a festive meal - is often organised. The king also sometimes arranges a so-called counter-performance during his visit. This is often a cultural program that Willem-Alexander (and his team) organizes.

In addition to the trade delegation and other personnel (such as a lady-in-waiting), Dutch journalists also travel with them. They report on the visit and are also allowed to speak briefly with Willem-Alexander (and Máxima).

The King and Queen begin their current state visit in Oslo, where they are received at the Royal Palace by King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Willem-Alexander later lays a wreath at the national monument. Furthermore, the couple is present at a state banquet of King Harald, where both kings give a speech.

On Wednesday, the royal couple will attend a meeting on human rights in the Deichman library and the transport ship Zr. ms. Rotterdam, to discuss defense cooperation between the two countries. In addition, a meeting is planned with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Willem-Alexander and Máxima pay three-day state visit to Norway

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima begin a three-day state visit to Norway today. The royal couple is doing so at the invitation of the Norwegian King Harald V.

Visit to a seaweed culture laboratory
The royal couple will go to the city of Trondheim on the last day of the visit. Crown Prince Haakon will give a speech that day and there will be lunch with the mayor of the city.

The King and Queen will also visit a laboratory for seaweed cultivation and an 'energy plus' building that "generates more solar energy over its lifespan than the construction, operation and demolition costs combined", according to the Government Information Service.

Ben Knapen, the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs, supervises the three-day state visit.

What a lovely dress on Maxima, that rich green suits her to a T.   I also love Queen Sonja's blue coat.

The brown dress Sonja wore in the later photo, I didn't like.  I don't think I like her brown boots with the blue coat either.

That one photo, or was it two, of Maxima giving "camera eyes" was  Snare ... I wish she'd leave that to Mary and her ilk.

Video of the Royals at the Palace, they seem very comfortable with each other (as to be expected) but I notice Maxima and Martha Louise seem quite close IMO.

Love the dress Max is wearing,

As far as I know it is the same one as she wore in the UK, when visiting Queen Elizabeth II. But then with the cape part 'closed'
