Princess Amalia is 18 years old; this changes for the crown princess

Princess Amalia has turned 18. It has not been announced how the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima celebrates her birthday today.

On King's Day in Eindhoven last April, she told the press that she was not very excited about turning 17, "so 18 will not be very different". However, the life of the heir to the throne now that she is of age will be more dominated by her future role as Queen of the Netherlands. A look at Princess Amalia's future in five questions and answers.

Can Amalia become queen now she's 18?
Should her father, King Willem-Alexander, die or relinquish the throne, Amalia will become the new queen according to the hereditary succession as laid down in the Constitution. "As long as she was a minor, it was arranged by law that Queen Máxima or Prince Constantijn would act as regent in that case, until Amalia turned 18," says Peter Rehwinkel, constitutional law expert, former PvdA MP. and author of the book 'Amalia, Duty Calls'. "That no longer applies, so that is an important change for Amalia."

It happened to Wilhelmina, Amalia's great-great-grandmother, in 1890, when her father, King Willem III, died. Wilhelmina was only 10 years old and too young to rule. Her mother, Queen Emma, therefore acted as regent until Wilhelmina was 18 years old.

Amalia says in the book that Claudia de Breij wrote about her on the occasion of her 18th birthday, that she would like to appoint her mother as regent, if she had to take over the kingship now, "In practice it is not as simple as 'just ask my mother'", says Rehwinkel. "Amalia should temporarily resign from her position and the government must then appoint a regent or regent. That must then be laid down in law, so there is more to it."
Are we going to see Amalia in public more often?
"If her studies allow it, she will attend the driving tour and the reading of the Speech from the Throne on Prinsjesdag. And now and then she may also perform official duties," says Royal House reporter Jozephine Trehy. "An important public event is in any case tomorrow, when she is introduced to the Council of State. She will also give a speech there and that is an exciting moment for Amalia."

Where we won't see her is at the polling station. Amalia has indicated that she will not exercise her right to vote, something her father and grandmother are not doing either.

What role will Princess Amalia have in the Council of State?
From the moment she turns 18, Princess Amalia will automatically (automatically) be a member of the Council of State, the government's highest advisory body. This does not mean, however, that she will also become a member of the Council. "She is allowed to participate in the ceremonial meeting and also in the Advisory Department," says Rehwinkel. "This way she can gain knowledge about legislation and constitutional law. That helps her to prepare for her future task as queen."

Amalia does not have the right to vote in the Council of State and that also applies to King Willem-Alexander, who is chairman of the Council, and Queen Máxima, who, like Amalia, is allowed to attend meetings. The day-to-day management is in the hands of the vice-president, Thom de Graaf. "In practice, the king and queen are really only at the Council of State on special occasions, such as tomorrow, when their daughter is welcomed."

Can Amalia also refuse the kingship?
Refusal is hardly possible, says Rehwinkel. "But in fact it is also not an issue. It seems that Amalia has reconciled herself with her future as Queen of the Netherlands. What can happen is that she does not receive parliamentary permission for an intended marriage. Then her right to the throne lapses. ."

Her father was clear at the time: love comes before the throne. "Willem-Alexander had already made his marriage proposal to Máxima when the political issue surrounding her father had not yet been resolved. A few exciting weeks followed," says Rehwinkel. Amalia seems to feel the same way as her father. She told Claudia de Breij that "she cannot choose at the expense of herself. Then I cannot give the best for our country."

What do we know about Amalia's future plans?
Amalia is now on a gap year, during which she follows internships at home and abroad. She is expected to graduate next year. "Whether she will do that in Leiden like her father and grandmother is still the question," says NOS reporter Trehy. "It would fit in with the tradition."

Amalia has in any case made it known in a letter to Prime Minister Rutte that she will return the allowance of about 1.6 million euros, to which she is entitled from the age of 18, as long as she is studying. That was good for her image, Rehwinkel believes. Trehy thinks Amalia can also benefit from this. "As long as she refunds the allowance, she can take more space for her own development."

Rehwinkel expects that Amalia will only start after her studies on a program that should prepare her for kingship, just like her father did. It is therefore possible that she regularly appears at the meetings of the Council of State.

New photos of birthday princess Amalia (18) shared

The Government Information Service shared new photos of Princess Amalia on Tuesday morning, who is celebrating her eighteenth birthday today. The photos were taken recently at Huis ten Bosch palace, where the princess lives with her family.

The celebration of Amalia's birthday is 'private' according to the Government Information Service. However, several municipalities will have the composition Amalia Eighteen played by carillonneurs and citizens will be called upon to hang their flag and pennant outside.

Amalia plays ski lodge music and has a hunting diploma: facts about the princess

After the appearance of Amalia by Claudia de Breij, we know a lot more about our heir apparent. She likes to start the day by listening to songs like Anton Aus Tirol and she has a 'turnable' voice.

Amalia has already obtained her hunting diploma. Her father Willem-Alexander hunts every year for half a day on Kroondomein Het Loo and it is possible that this tradition will be continued by the princess. She is allowed to do this from her eighteenth birthday. The king thought it was important for his daughter to graduate, because she takes over the crown domain and "must have the knowledge in any case".

The princess is not quite sure what she wants to study yet. She is now on a gap year. She wants to travel in it - which is made more difficult by the corona crisis - and do an internship, probably in the United States. It is not yet entirely clear to Amalia what she wants to study afterwards. One of the options is International Relations, but she is also thinking about "something economic".

Money is not an end in itself, but she would like to understand it, writes De Breij in her book about the princess. Amalia would like to obtain her bachelor's degree in the Netherlands and would like to do her master's degree abroad. "I would like to be outside the Netherlands for two years."

Amalia is fond of music and can sing wonderfully, according to her parents, among others, and also De Breij, who sang the song Memory from Cats together with the princess behind the piano. She likes musical music, often plays classical music while studying and often starts the day with après-ski bangs to wake up. "My parents also think this is quite serious," says Amalia.

It is a conscious choice of Amalia not to share her singing talent with the world. De Breij writes in her book that the princess has "a clear voice, volume, a lot of dynamics and a very unique timbre". "The kind of voice that turns chairs in television programs." But participating in The Voice, Amalia is not going to do that.

"Singing is something I keep to myself. Because if you make that public, you lose a part. Then I have the idea that people can demand that from me. Make me do things I don't want to."

She finds it a shame that the free use of social media is not as self-evident for Amalia as for many other peers. "Just like everyone else, you just want to be able to share a bit of photos with friends, that's all. But with us people go after it, ask in my DMs if they can follow me, that kind of weird stuff," explains the princess, who in any case does not have a public account, out.

"There are even people who have offered 50 euros to people who followed me to send a screenshot of my posts, of my photos, of my story. I look at that with a little incomprehension. Sometimes I think, like a middle finger at that people: then I just delete everything."

Amalia is now heir to the throne: what will change for her?

"Eighteen is still a long way off for me, I haven't given much thought to that. Eighteen won't be much different," Amalia said a year ago about her birthday on which she officially becomes heir to the throne. Still, on December 7, things change substantially.

Kingship
Firstly, the most important point: should something happen to Willem-Alexander, Amalia will be the next to ascend the throne. In conversation with Claudia de Breij, the princess said that she would rather leave it to her mother first. But according to Peter Rehwinkel, author of the book Amalia: duty calls, it is not that easy. The princess should "expressly lay down" the kingship.

Council of State
On the day after her eighteenth birthday, Amalia is introduced to the Council of State. From the moment she is eighteen years old, according to the Constitution, she has a seat on the Council of State. The Council provides the government and parliament with advice on legislation and governance and is the highest general administrative court in the Netherlands. On Wednesday, Amalia is only welcomed and she gives a short speech. "She won't participate in meetings for the time being," Rehwinkel says. This will happen more regularly after her studies.

Prince's Day
Next Prinsjesdag Amalia will also be present and take a seat in the hall. Rehwinkel expects that the princess will also ride with her parents in the Glass Coach. By the way, Alexia and Ariana will also be present at Prinsjesdag from their eighteenth birthday.

Royal day
"She will be seen a little more explicitly in the company of her father and mother", Rehwinkel expects. Amalia is now on her gap year and may be traveling then, but will interrupt her trip for King's Day.

Foreign visits
Now eighteen, Amalia is allowed to use the PH-GOV, the government aircraft used by the royal family. According to Rehwinkel, Amalia will eventually, perhaps during her studies, travel abroad for an official visit or represent the Netherlands at a funeral or wedding, for example. Her father also started making such visits during his studies and accompanied, for example, his mother Beatrix.

Right to vote
Like all other eighteen year olds, Amalia is now eligible to vote. But like her parents, she will not exercise her right to vote. According to the Government Information Service, the king is impartial and voting only leads to speculation as to which party he will vote for. Máxima and Princess Beatrix also do not use their voting rights.

Military service
Girls born in 2003 or later are required to do military service. That also applies to Amalia. There is no compulsory attendance, but Rehwinkel expects the princess to receive military training in a certain sense. Constitutional law, for example, is often part of a university study.

In the publicity
Except on King's Day and at the annual photo shoots, Amalia does not get much publicity. According to Rehwinkel, that is about to change. She will probably also be present at the New Year's reception at the Paleis op de Dam at some point.

The style evolution of adult princess Amalia: 'Just as consistent as Beatrix'

Princess Beatrix is known for her suits and iconic hairstyle, King Willem-Alexander can be dressed in a dark blue suit and Queen Máxima often opts for exuberant accessories. Amalia has since been named one of the most stylish princesses in the world by Vogue. What characterizes the style of the heir apparent? And what will she add to the allure of the royal family?

Josine Droogendijk, owner of the website modekoninginmaxima.nl, sees a clear division in Amalia's wardrobe. "On the one hand, the future queen, with classic clothes. A bit à la Máxima, but a bit more modest. On the other hand, that of an 'ordinary' teenage girl, with jeans, sneakers."

Miluska van 't Lam, editor-in-chief of fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar, notes a development in the style of Amalia. "Willem-Alexander previously said that his daughter first has to get to know herself before she presents herself to the public. You can see that very much, and I notice that Amalia is becoming more and more herself."

"In the beginning she leaned more on her mother's style choices and dressed a bit too mature. But from 2020 I really see a style emerging that suits someone who has discovered herself and is comfortable in her own skin. She is very experimental, but also refreshingly sober."

She's like a trendsetter
According to Van 't Lam, Amalia dresses like her peers, but you can see that she is aware of her position. "She shops where other young people also shop and wears her mother's clothes. That is also characteristic of her generation, that they wear clothes from their parents or grandparents and that is no longer something to be ashamed of."

Every now and then Amalia reveals herself as a trendsetter. That happened, for example, with the red and white dress she wore in the family photo that was released for the eightieth birthday of Princess Beatrix. Droogendijk: "Celebrities wore it, it flew out of the shops. That was really her fashion moment."

Van 't Lam, in turn, appreciates the yellow dress by Lisa Marie Fernandez that Amalia wore during King's Day 2020. "I was really flabbergasted by that. Including the jewelry from SeeMe, an Amsterdam initiative that is committed to survivors of domestic violence. Amalia conveys a message in an inspiring way."

Purple hair is just fine
According to Droogendijk, Amalia has complete freedom in choosing her outfits. "It is often said: the royal family has to do this and that, but a lot is possible. It used to be unthinkable that you had lunch with the royal family in jeans with holes, now it just happens."

So if Amalia decides to go for a purple haircut, there's no one to stop her. "Certainly now that she is eighteen, Máxima and Willem-Alexander do not have much more to say about that," continues Droogendijk. "With each generation, the boundaries are shifting, fashion also plays a major role in this. Máxima has brought more trousers into the royal family, for example. Amalia will also give it a twist in her own way. If anyone can change etiquette, it is her. ."

'Not the type to keep surprising'
Van 't Lam hopes that Amalia will opt more often for the new generation of Dutch and Flemish designers who make sustainable clothing and who also regularly take something from her mother's closet.

"That she is a role model for young people and shows: look, you can also make these choices. She is very mature and sensible, as Beatrix said so beautifully. You can see within that sensible framework that she receives from her position. that she is bumping her elbows into those frames, disarming and stealing the hearts of the audience. Amalia can use this to share stories and break taboos."

According to Droogendijk, the adult Amalia will still regularly knock on her mother's door for fashion advice. But, says the fashion connoisseur, her looks will also "have a good pinch of Beatrix in it". "I also expect that consistent style from Amalia. She is not the type to keep surprising with new styles and brands. Just look at the slightly wider trousers, which she has worn several times on King's Day. If something pleases me , it stays in."

Wendy van Dijk, Monica Geuze and Katja Schuurman, among others, were also spotted in the red and white dress that Amalia was wearing.

Aunt Inés Zorreguieta was also featured in a documentary about Amalia this week. The only thoroughbred (younger) sister of mother Máxima. Inés is believed to have committed suicide. According to the documentary, Inés had a good relationship with her nieces. It also emerged that the Zorreguieta family Amalia was a real Oranje, while younger sister Alexia would be a real Zorreguieta (not only in appearance, but also in character and behavior).

You deserve many  :star:s for these posts! Thanks!

Btw something lost in translation, Inés of course was Maxima's full sister, not half sister.

As for Amalia getting her hunting diploma: that is hard work. The shooting part is easy compared to the amount of knowledge you need to learn and be able to apply.

We have been to South America and one of the most striking things to me was the way women embraced their bodies no matter the size. Their clothes were often tight or form fitting and brightly colored. They did not try to disguise aspects of their features or selves in any way. There was no apology for extra fat on the arms or mid section like I notice in the US no scarfs or loose tops to cover up. No mom clothes just women wearing what they like. It was a revelation and so healthy. It seems Maxima has always had that and has passed it on to her girls and that is a good thing.

Loosely translated as:

24-carat stamp and congratulations everywhere; this is how Amalia's 18th birthday is celebrated

Corona throws a spanner in the works for major festivities, but the 18th birthday of Crown Princess Amalia today will not pass without a hitch in the Netherlands.

Lovers of the royal family bring flowers and gifts to Huis ten Bosch. And the bells were rung in various places in the Netherlands between 09:00 and 09:10. The Oranjebond has also called for the flag with an orange pennant to hang.

On the website of the association, dozens of people wrote a birthday message to the princess. Mara wrote: "Congratulations on your 18th birthday. Have a nice day and you look beautiful as always. Stay as you are, you are the best!".

PostNL has designed a special 24-carat gold stamp with a monochrome portrait of the princess. 750 stamps have been made and they are for sale for 50 euros. If you buy one, you will receive the stamp in a special box, together with a certificate of authenticity. Gold stamps are only issued in honor of important events.

Flag gift
Amalia also received a gift from her father, King Willem-Alexander. She has been appointed Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Netherlands Lion and Knight in the House Order of the Golden Lion of Nassau. She also received her award flag. Her sisters Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane also receive an award flag when they turn 18.

What Amalia is doing today is a private matter, the Government Information Service said earlier. The service only wanted to say that the future queen is celebrating with due observance of the corona rules.

Tonight the AVROTROS will broadcast the documentary Amalia 18 years. Together with royal family expert Rick Evers, presenter Dionne Stax visits places where Amalia grew up. They also visit Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. Amalia 18 years old can be seen on NPO 1 at 8.30 pm.

The Dutch Prime Minister about Amalia's 18th birthday:
https://twitter.com/MinPr.../1468113092651401217?s=20

The text with the recent picture of Amalia can be translated as:
The Princess of Orange turns 18 today! A special moment for our country and a wonderful milestone for her. My heartfelt congratulations to Princess Amalia. I wish her a pleasant and above all festive day.
