Princess Beatrix opens Year of the Miller during the 50th anniversary of the Guild of Voluntary Millers

Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands opened the Year of the Miller on Saturday afternoon, January 15, during the anniversary celebration of the Guild of Volunteer Millers. This year the Guild is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Zaans Museum in Zaandam. The first miller's exam was held in Zaandam in 1972.

The Guild of Voluntary Mills trains people who want to run and/or grind monumental wind or watermills. There are currently about 1600 millers active to keep the 1100 mills in the Netherlands running or grinding on a regular basis. In this way, cultural heritage is preserved for the future. The Guild has a department in each province that provides training for millers in their province. In 2017, UNESCO declared the 'Miller's Craft' as an intangible heritage. The Netherlands is seen internationally as a guide country when it comes to training millers.

After speeches by several millers and one of the founders of the Guild, Princess Beatrix opens the Year of the Miller. Afterwards she speaks with various millers about their experiences and the importance of the training for the profession.

March 30
Beatrix joined the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester for a reception at Kensington Palace to celebrate the centenary of the Anglo-Netherlands Society.
The Society works to develop goodwill and understanding between the people of the Netherlands and GB.

That is not one of her better looks. What are those weird brown triangles doing? Plus the gold fabric looks too stiff.

The brown triangles are the actual sleeves. Normally you wouldn't really see them because they are covered by the capelet. Making the entire sleeve out of that brocade-like fabric would have made the top even bulkier. The top is almost certainly made by Theresia Vreugdenhil, Beatrix's long time couturier. Since Ms Vreugdenhil died in 2012, it's probably an oldie.

Yup, it looks like a Ms Vreugdenhil (or her successors), but I can't remember when Bea wore it before.

Many of Beatrix's former (evening) dresses later show up as suits or deux pieces:

And there have been other alternations to her outfits:

The last dress she has worn on a '90s Prinsjesdag, the skirt used to be longer.

She also often changes between skirt and pants lately:

I think that for the most part, she dresses extremely well for a woman of her age. And hooray for pants-wearing. They are much more comfortable and give her more freedom of movement. I think it's wise to take some of her fancy dresses and convert them to tops to wear over very nice pants. She is now 84 and I think comfort and safety are the two main considerations. I hope she sticks around for a long time.

I agree about the comfy changes. But all in all, I really think her fashion choices are about the oddest in the royal or celebrity world.

I love Beatrix  always did  she has this cute grandma vibe that all of us can easily connect with.
Actually she reminds me a lot of my grandma  perhaps because the hairstyle is the same
She looks lovely in pants  Smiley

I've always had a soft spot for Beatrix, I think she's the best regnant queen/king of her generation by a mile. The  younger generation of regnant royals should mirror her institutionally how to do things right in a parliamentary monarchy.

Beatrix certainly had an has her flaws, but she is know for her buisiness like approach of the monarchy (and all related). This was striking, as it differs from her mothers, Queen Juliana's, approach. Juliana was more a people person, wanted to be "normal"/ "common".
