Past Friday it was all over the (online) news and media here in the Netherlands. A cousin of Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein had shot the largest bear of Romania.

https://nos.nl/artikel/23...rootste-beer-van-het-land

Roughly translated as:

Anger in Romania: Did Liechtenstein's prince poach the country's largest bear?

Romanian authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the shooting of the country's largest brown bear. The Romanian environmental inspectorate checks, among other things, whether the case may have involved poaching. Protagonist in the case? A Liechtenstein prince.

On Wednesday, two environmental organizations accused Prince Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein in a press release of having poached Arthur, "the largest bear in Romania and perhaps the EU", in a protected nature reserve in the Carpathians.

The 42-year-old prince does not want to respond to the media in Austria, where he lives.

Not a problem bear
Since 2016, there has been a total ban on bear hunting in Romania, where the largest brown bear population in Europe lives with about 6,000 bears.

Only in exceptional cases will a hunting permit be issued in the country, for example if a bear causes structural nuisance or is dangerous to humans. Prince Emanuel, family of the reigning Liechtenstein prince Hans Adam II, is said to have bought a permit for such a 'problem bear' for 7,000 euros.

"It was about a young bear who came close to houses", says Robert Bas, former NOS journalist who now lives in Romania, in the NOS Radio 1 Journaal.

But in reality, in March, the prince would have deliberately searched for Arthur with the permit in his back pocket 70 kilometers away, deep in a protected forest area. The 17-year-old male lived far away from civilization and was known in Romania as the largest brown bear in the country. That made him a prestigious hunting trophy.

It is clear that the prince did not come to solve the problem of the local population.

Gabriel Paun, President of the Romanian environmental organization Agent Green
Robert Bas explains that Arthur's death has been the talk of the town in Romania for days. "A lot of people are very angry about this," says Bas. "This is very similar to what you sometimes see in Africa. In other words: rich people who shoot a lion or elephant with permission from the government."

According to Bas, there is a hint of corruption surrounding the shooting of the bear. "Looks like someone made up: we get a permit for another bear and then pretend he accidentally shot this bear."

Gabriel Paun, president of the Romanian environmental organization Agent Green, wonders how the prince might mistake a young bear causing trouble at a few farms for the largest male in the country. “It is clear that the prince did not come to solve the problem of the locals. He came to take home the biggest trophy and hang it on the wall,” he says.

The two environmental organizations that put the case on the map believe that there are too many gray areas in the Romanian hunting licensing system that trophy hunters can therefore benefit from.

Robert Bas: "In addition, the Romanians are increasingly interested in their own nature. There are many bears living here and they are also increasingly becoming a tourist attraction. People come to Romania to see them. If a prince comes by to shoot the biggest one. , that does not go well in Romania. "

Bas says that the first petitions have been started to have the prince return at least Arthur's skin, which he would have taken as a trophy.

The worst thing for me is that they don't even stand by their word.

They hunt, if they want. And they spend money to the WWF, if it suits their purpose.

Cyril, it's the World Wildlife Fund, an organization dedicated to animal conservation/protection of endangered species.  IIRC, King Juan Carlos of Spain had been the President of it but had to step down when he was pictured next to an elephant that he killed on a hunt.

Prince Bernhard, hubby of Queen Juliana, helped found the World Wildlife Fund (later renamed World Wide Fund for Nature), becoming its first president in 1961.In 1970, along with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and other associates, he established the WWF's financial endowment "The 1001: A Nature Trust".

As far as I can see Juan Carlos hasn't been a president of WWF. The only 2 royals who where president are Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (1961-1976) and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh (1981-1996). Oh wait, JC was a honorary president of the Spanish division of the WWF.....
