Gum chewing girls and cud chewing cows Are strangely alike, tho’ different somehow. And the difference is, as I think of it now, The look of intelligence on the face of the cow.
(My mother, circa, well you guess.)
It never works for anyone applying older norms like these on young people. You just end up offending both parties.. Have you seen William Hensen’s insufferable etiquette channels? Young fogeys are a huge thing! 😹

Maxima appears to be giving Alexia stink-eye (maybe) Certainly the press seemed very determined to find things wrong with Alexia. Well it seems to be something for specific Dutch media trying to make a fuzz about things Dutch royals do. Some are legit, others are far out.

Alexia is going to study in London: Science & Engineering for Social Change
Princess Alexia is going to study at University College London (UCL). She will start there in September with a bachelor's degree in Science & Engineering for Social Change. This was announced by the Government Information Service.
The princess had enrolled at several locations, including the University of Groningen. Last month she said she was still suffering from choice stress.
According to the UCL website, the study that Alexia has chosen is about "solving major social challenges". Students study various subjects from a technical, social and political perspective. According to the university, the multidisciplinary knowledge that they gain is "in demand in the business community, charities, the government and policy functions".
Alexia obtained her international pre-university diploma, the International Baccalaureate, in Wales last year. The now 19-year-old princess attended the United World College of the Atlantic, where her father King Willem-Alexander also used to go.
Last year, the princess took a gap year. During King's Day in Emmen, she revealed a little bit about the content for the first time. She said that she had been able to travel and "get to know many different cultures". She also said that she had "worked a little".
Italy and Spain Alexia is not the only one of the three princesses who has chosen to spend some time abroad. Princess Ariane decided last year to continue her secondary school years in Italy. She is attending the United World College (UWC) Adriatic, near Trieste.
Princess Amalia studied in Spain last year because of threats. She had more freedom of movement there. She is now back in Amsterdam, where she is studying Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the UvA.
Restricted by cameras Amalia and Alexia said during a photo session in June that they experience less freedom than their peers because they can be photographed or filmed wherever they go. According to Alexia, it is "currently the case that everyone has a camera with them" and that videos and photos are easily put online.
She understands that people recognize her and that that is "interesting" to them. "But I do feel limited by it." Alexia says she feels like she cannot do what her peers do, because she is afraid "that it will all be on social media the next day".
That fear is not unfounded: in 2022, private videos of the princess were leaked via TikTok, and a year earlier a photo of the princess partying was leaked. The Government Information Service emphasizes that "the princess's study time is considered private".https://www.nu.nl/konings...e-studeren-in-londen.htmlLoosely translated as: Princess Alexia to study Science & Engineering for Social Change in London

Princess Alexia has chosen the bachelor's degree in Science & Engineering for Social Change at University College London. The Government Information Service announced this on Friday. The nineteen-year-old princess completed her secondary school education in 2022 and then took a gap year. Earlier, the daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima said that she experienced a lot of "choice stress" around the decision about her study.
"I think I'm certainly not the only one my age who is very concerned about that choice," Alexia said during a press moment in June. She did say that she has registered at various universities and for several courses. "Which one that will be, really depends on personal reasons."
In the same conversation, Máxima confirmed that her daughter had registered for a study at the University of Groningen. According to Alexia, she did not know at that time whether that would also be the final choice.
Alexia obtained her International Baccalaureate in 2023 at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales. After that, she took a gap year, during which she traveled a lot, she told the NOS on King's Day. "I have been so happy to be able to travel a lot, to get to know other cultures. And especially to be busy with something other than school."
When asked whether she was really ready for that, the princess did not really answer. She did say that she also worked. "In such a gap year, every moment is special and I have enjoyed everything very much."
Amalia studied temporarily in Madrid Alexia is the second daughter of Willem-Alexander and Máxima to enter student life. Amalia (20) is studying Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the University of Amsterdam. Due to threats against her, the heir to the throne had to live and study in Madrid for a year, it became clear last spring.
Amalia now lives in Amsterdam again. The threat has not yet disappeared, but thanks to measures she can live and study in the Netherlands. What those measures are, is not known.

Financially speaking, studying at university (in the Netherlands or abroad) is not an option for everyone. Even though the Netherlands has abandoned the loan system and people are receiving student finance again. In my time, I was lucky with my parents, who paid for my studies in the Netherlands (I did the rest as much as possible myself). But at the time, I already had fellow students who borrowed fully/completely. And many, if not all, combined it with side jobs/part-time jobs. There are no scholarships and such like as in the US. And yes, where there's a will, there's a way. But I do hope that these royal students realize how lucky they are in that respect.....

I think Alexia is way better off going to London and enjoy a bit of a rather anonymous life. Some people will recognize her, but not everyone. If she is half way clever, she stays there and builds her own circle of friends and her own career without being "daughter of" or "sister of" all the time.
She got that bad girl image during her teenage years when she was posing ridiculously in front of the cameras. That was very immature and unfortunate, but I feel she has moved on since then. To me, she is a modern, rather clever young woman and I hope she will stay away from the limelight a bit - at least it would be nice if she learned from cousin Eloises many mistakes without making them herself.
I think she is very different to the rest of the family - she will (hopefully) be interesting to follow if she stays on the path. She is clever and beautiful and has a lot of interesting contacts. She can rock a future for herself.

Me, personally, wonder how and what youngest sister Ariane will be up to.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Alexia turns out to be the brilliant one? Maybe she will be the academic high achiever and end up with an great non-royal career somewhere.

When you don't specify activities saying something like I traveled and got to know other cultures sounds like "through their beer culture" lol. I support her getting a degree to help affect social change but when your summer activities don't align with the program it always sounds off and that is not even meant as a criticism. But the daughter of the King of the NL would ideally be working with non profits that are working in areas of change she's interested in. And then you go on your beer sampling backpack trip lol.

Princess Alexia recently changed her studies. The daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima is now studying the bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of University College London, according to the website of the Royal House. The nineteen-year-old princess started the bachelor's degree in Science & Engineering for Social Change in September. The reason for the change of studies has not been announced. Alexia's study time is considered private.
Civil engineering focuses on the design, construction and management of bridges, dikes and tunnels, among other things. The study is more science-oriented than the princess's first choice.
Alexia obtained her International Baccalaureate at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales in 2023. In doing so, she followed in the footsteps of her father, who also went to school in Wales.
The princess previously said that she was struggling with choice stress regarding her studies. "I think that I am certainly not the only one of my age who is very concerned about that choice," Alexia said in June during a press moment. She did say that she had registered at various universities and for multiple courses.
