I wouldn't call it an alteration, if you wear a jacket or coat or something on top a sleeveless dress.
Though to be fair, why she thought those colours matched is beyond me..

I can agree with you upon that. But heck, it is another way of wearing a dress or related.
And I also included other royals who had/did the same Wink Smiley

The site of Josine Droogendijk about Mary's dress

Loosely translated as:

And that's version THREE: Mary has dress altered for Jordan's wedding

Loyal visitors to this website know that Princess Mary likes to have her clothes altered. But that a dress is transformed THREE times is unique.

Or actually, the garment has even been altered four times. In 2009, Princess Mary bought it as a strapless dress. That turned out to be too exposed for a royal wedding in a church, so for the Great Day of Victoria and Daniel of Sweden she had gold lace applied to the top.

After the wedding, the dress went back to the studio. There an asymmetrical shoulder line was added to the bodice.

And yesterday there was version three. (Or four, depending on how you see it). Also asymmetrical, but with refined lace that ends in a cape.

Tell me: which version do you like best?

Well, you can't fault her for trying to get maximum mileage out of that dress but the third incarnation was maybe a little too revealing for a formal event in an Islamic country.

I think it would have been almost fine if she'd left it in the second alteration

It looks less elegant to me. It’s like they found a glittery but granny tablecloth and sewed it to the arm. The dress’s second incarnation was the best even if Mary doesn’t suit grayish pastels.

The plain, one shoulder version is the nicest, and most flattering.  But she really shouldn't have chosen this one out of 100s of formal dresses she owns for a reception in a ME country.

For the wedding in a ME country the first version (the one she wore for the wedding of Victoria and Daniel) would have been best as at least her shoulders would have technically been covered. Given how many gowns she must own I'm really surprised she felt this one was the best to wear for this particular wedding.

The Daily Fail has an article today about how the Princess of Wales has pieces altered to be more modest. The Elie Saab dress she wore for the actual wedding ceremony this week has sheer panels in the bodice and from the waist in places, these were taken out so it was all the same fabric thus more modest. TBH it explains why the bottom half of the dress is pretty boring IMO, the catwalk version wasn't.

The catwalk version is stunning, but I still love Kate’s version for the setting she was in.
