It feels surreal to create this new thread, I'm in shock. But His Majesty has released a statement:

https://www.instagram.com...MUQD/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Prime Minister Liz Truss has confirmed that Charles' regnal name will be King Charles III.

I think it's significant that her last act as head of state was to receive the new PM, a woman. If she had died in the middle of the changing-of-PMs, it would have been awkward or unprecedented or something. This was a smooth transition. Obviously Charles III could have done it right and properly, but if she'd died over the weekend and then the first thing would be Charles swearing in the new PM, happening at the same time, it would have been chaotic. Doable, but strange. Duty to the end.

Yes, the significance of this is not lost on many.

Charles will be proclaimed on Saturday, according to the BBC.

On Saturday we will have the Accession Council, the ceremonial gathering for the official proclamation of the new King and the special session at the Parliament where senior MPs will take the oath to King Charles III. The session will start at 2PM, I presume all the other ones will take place in the morning.

And to add to that...

On Friday this is likely to include a gun salute, King Charles and Queen Camilla returning to London and the new King holding his first audience with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss.

An address to the nation is expected from King Charles.

I would love if any of this was aired. It would be so interesting to watch.

I would have hoped he'd wait until Saturday to make the address to the nation.  Until after his Proclamation.  But what do I know ... I do feel it's good that Charles will have his reign, and I don't want to be a Gloomy Gus (or Gemsheal 😉) but already there seems to be a great rush to announce things, it does seem a bit - tacky, the poor Q E II not even cold ... But I wasn't raised in the age of social media, which demands instant feeding and instant answers, so I guess my feelings must be taken with a ton of 😑.

The counsellors of state are now

Camilla

William

Harry

Andrew

Beatrice

They will remain this way (barring any further deaths) until George is 21 when he will take a place and Beatrice will fall off the list

Out of curiosity, will Kate become a Counsellor of State when she is Queen Consort? And with Beatrice being a CoS now, may that pave the way to her being a working royal, or have there been historic occasions where a CoS is not a working royal?

If he has the longevity of his parents, he will easily be on the throne for at least 25 years, a full generation. People will get used to him. They already know him.

Does this mean Harry is automatically in the Privvy Council? He moved up a spot to number 5, but he is not trustworthy at all.

No

He will have to be appointed that that - as William and Camilla were a few years ago.

All that has changed is that everyone has moved up a spot in the line of succession, William has added a long list of new titles (Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland), Beatrice is now a Counsellor of State as is Camilla (both automatic under the 1937 Regency Act) and the Cambridge's become the Cornwall and Cambridge's (assuming they follow the precedent set in 1901 whereby George V was The Duke of Cornwall and York until created Prince of Wales).

In addition the Edinburgh, Merioneth and Greenwich titles have 'merged with the Crown' while Wales and Chester titles are 'in abeyance' until re-created presumably for William at some time in the future (could be today or next week or next month or whenever but I would expect William to hold both of those titles by the time of the coronation).

Charles' sons are now also 'The Prince own name' although officially only William will use that while in Scotland as it is used with The Duke of Rothesay title while elsewhere officially only his title is used. Andrew, Edward and Anne remain The Prince Andrew, The Prince Edward and The Princess Anne but again their titles will be used and not that form.

The CoS are set in law - the spouse of the monarch (so Catherine will become one when William is King) and the first four adults in the line of succession over 21 (unless the heir apparent who gets that role when over 18).

One thing to remember is that the PM hasn't yet been sworn and nor has her cabinet so there is also that event to happen - that is what the cancelled Privy Council was to do so the Accession Council will presumably be followed by a Privy Council meeting (or maybe they will be merged).

The Regency Act of 1937 established the position and states that the COS shall be the Sovereign's consort (if there is one) and the first four in the line of succession above the age of 21 (save for the heir apparent who only needs to be 18).

Since then several people who did not have royal status but had the required place in succession have served as COS...Alastair Windsor, 2nd Duke of Connaught and Strathearn from 25 August 1942 – 26 April 1943 (replaced Prince George, Duke of Kent upon his death), Maud Carnegie, Countess of Southesk who was entitled to the style HH Princess Maud but didn't use it from 26 April 1943 – 7 February 1944 (after Alastair's death), and George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood from 7 February 1944 – 21 August 1951 (replaced Maud when he turned 21).  George Lascelles served a second time from 6 February 1952 – 9 October 1956 following QEII's accession.  Prince William of Gloucester was a COS from 18 December 1962 – 15 August 1971 while he he was first at university and later working, first for a bank and later in the civil service.  Prince Richard of Gloucester served the first time from 26 August 1965 – 14 November 1966 while first at university and later working for the Ministry of Public Building and Works.

Being a COS is not connect to being a working royal or vice versa.

Cruising some of my news sites I came across the moniker "Chuckie Three Sticks." It hit the funny bone on a sad day.

Oh yes, truly I understand - the Monarch is Head of State, and business cannot wait.  I truly understand.  There is business that must proceed, decisions that must be made.  My "feeling" is simply wait 48 hours on the address to the nation.  And I don't think it would have harmed anything to wait on "King Charles III" til Friday morning, either.   (As I type it is 8:06 PM Thursday in the U.S.)
