It feels surreal to create this new thread, I'm in shock. But His Majesty has released a statement:

Prime Minister Liz Truss has confirmed that Charles' regnal name will be King Charles III.

I’m glad he’s chosen Charles III. It would be so strange to have him be called some other name.

Agreed. There were rumours he would use George, which imo would have been a disservice to Prince George. I read somewhere that Charles was once worried that his name would bring bad luck as it did for Charles I and II to an extent. Though it does seem a post-Victoria tradition to not use the name Kings were born with as regnal names for various reasons, e.g Edward VII and George Vi.

He's smart and practical - just like his mother was.
He gets the job done the most efficient and professional way.
No need for fuss.

May his regnant years be fruitful!

Glad he's using Charles III. Going by another name would be so confusing.

Long live the king!

And yet I understand why he would want to avoid it, the past 2 Charles weren't nice reigns at all. In any case, I have always wondered why both HM and Prince Philip chose that name for him.

I am glad he kept is name. Super weird to see this thread, seems like an alien world almost. Alternative reality.

It will take a while to switch it.

I think he's going to make a good king. I appreciate that they came right out with the Queen Consort title too. He and Cams make a great team and I'm glad she will be by his side.

Charles II was the monarch of the restoration. Despite his prolific exploits regarding women etc, he did reign for 20 or so years and provided a stability after the Commonwealth and did his best given the Jacobite threat. Charles is indeed an unusual choice, maybe it was reflecting popular figures at the time of the new King's birth, like Charles de Gaulle. It has always surprised me that she did not name one of her children George or Albert.

I have always thought that it was the Queen Mother's dominating influence, being born the daughter of a Scottish peer; and that had either of her children been a boy, he would have been a Charles. Margaret Rose was supposed to be Ann(e) Margaret, but old George V shot it down. So I think that QEII was pushed from a young age into naming the first child of each gender Charles and Anne. Just a theory.

Back to the original topic, it's nice that he's going to lay the old Stuart ghosts to rest. There have been enough Georges since 1714.  Wink
