January 3
The Schack's secret Christmas holiday vacation
A big wish came true for Prince Joachim in December. He took Princess Marie and the children Count Nikolai, 23, Count Felix, 20, Count Henrik, 13, and Countess Athena, 10, to Vietnam, where they also celebrated Christmas. The trip was supposed to take place in 2020 but had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

The same thing happened the following year. But now the princely family finally managed to get away, and here Joachim finally got the opportunity to show the children the country where their grandfather, Prince Henrik, spent many of his childhood and youth years.

That's just wonderful....at least one family branch is honoring tradition and family history! I'm so glad, the Schack's keep Henrik's memory alive

Although much-delayed, I think this trip came at the right time. It proves a good distraction of the events taking place over the New Year and also enables Jokke and Marie to teach their kids that family is just as important to honour and learn, despite differences in titles.

Interesting! From what Marie says in Paris Match (translated on Twitter by UFO no more) the move to DC is not definite and she won’t/can’t say where she will be living in 24.

High paid jobs in a private  company in USA are usually not very stable. Plus after income tax, the money taken home might not be as good as the Danish appanage which is tax free and VAT free.

What? A Danish appanage is out of the question which is why they are now roaming the world. He is assigned to the Danish ministry in Paris and will be assigned to a similar government agency based in the US is my guess. Where did it say he would be working for a private company and anyway to bring a high level person to a company no matter the set up nonprofit or private is to ensure he will have a solid contract with good terms. He is not like you and me who are subject to being laid off because the company doesn't like you or re-organizes. And the tax burden in the US is quite low compared to other countries all things being equal.

I thought he was still receiving his apanage instead of a consulate salary? And doesn’t he still have his tax free status?

Sorry for the confusion. Right now in Paris he still has his tax free apanage.  I meant if he decided to move to US and worked for a private company, he would have to give up the apanage, his compensation from the private company would be taxed.  The highest tax rate in USA is 37% (federal) + 10.75% (DC). How much is Joke's Danish apanage now ? If it's about half million USD, he would need an $800,000 job in USA to break it even.

The rumors said he would be working for a private company, thus the Danish media already started asking him to give up his apanage. Marie said in the interview the rumors were not from them.  Grin.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie are moving to Washington, D.C.

"On 1 September 2023, His Royal Highness Prince Joachim begins a new position under the Ministry of Defence as defence industry attaché at the Embassy of Denmark in Washington, D.C., where The Prince, as Denmark’s representative, will take part in strengthening the defence industrial cooperation with the USA and Canada in the coming years.

Four years ago, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, together with the couple’s two children, moved to France. The reason was that Prince Joachim began France’s highest-ranking military education course as a supplement to The Prince’s longtime engagement in The Defence. After the education concluded, both The Prince and The Princess were affiliated with the Embassy of Denmark in Paris as defence attaché and Special Cultural Representative, respectively.

Prince Joachim and the family will move to Washington, D.C. during the summer of 2023."

I'm glad his position has been cleared up and I hope they enjoy living in the U.S., though it's bound to be a culture shock for the children.

Statement of the Ministry of Defence

Denmark is strengthening cooperation with the United States in the area of security and defense. And as part of the prioritization of Danish-American cooperation, Prince Joachim takes up the position of defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC on 1 September 2023.

H.R.H. Prince Joachim will be the new Defense Industry Attaché and Deputy Defense Attaché in Washington DC. As part of the prioritization of Danish-American cooperation, on 1 September 2023, Prince Joachim will take up the position of defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC.

During these years, Denmark is strengthening its cooperation with the United States in the area of security and defense, particularly in the area of the defense industry. The USA is Denmark's most important ally and strategic partner, and the appointment of Prince Joachim is done to strengthen the collaboration with the USA.

Prince Joachim will join the Danish Embassy in Washington DC on 1 September 2023, where he will cover the USA and Canada as an attaché. The position is for three years with the possibility of an extension.

- "The United States is our most important ally and cooperation partner. The transatlantic bond is absolutely crucial in the security policy situation we are in. It is our ambition to significantly strengthen defense industrial cooperation with the United States, and Prince Joachim will greatly contribute to this," says Acting Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.

As defense industry attaché, Prince Joachim will report to the Ministry of Defense and in day-to-day work to the Ambassador and the Defense Attaché in Washington DC.

Prince Joachim has a thorough knowledge of the Armed Forces, including the completion of military leadership training, experience as a defense attache in France, and knowledge in the defense industrial field, and these are qualifications he can draw on for the position of defense industrial attache in Washington DC

- "I am proud that I continue to have the opportunity to represent Denmark internationally in the area of security adefensence. Transatlantic cooperation is a high-priority area, and I am honored that they have found me qualified for the task," says Prince Joachim.

Prince Joachim will continue to carry out certain tasks for the Royal Household to the extent that his work as a defense industry attaché allows it.

The Prime Minister will put forward a proposal for a Parliamentary resolution on Prince Joachim's receipt of an annuity outside the kingdom, as long as he contests the position as defense industry attaché at the Danish embassy in Washington.

Military background
Prince Joachim's military training began in 1987 as a recruit in the Queen's Life Regiment. In 1988, Prince Joachim was appointed sergeant, and in 1989 he was appointed lieutenant in the reserve. After being appointed lieutenant, Prince Joachim served from 1989-90 as a platoon leader in a tank squadron at the Prince's Life Regiment.

From 1996 to 2004, Prince Joachim was commander of a tank squadron in the mobilization force at the Prince's Life Regiment and from 2005 attached to the Danish Division's staff as a major of the reserve.

After being appointed lieutenant colonel of the reserve in 2011, Prince Joachim has been appointed head of the Liaison Officers Group in the Total Defense Region of Funen, South, and South Jutland.

In April 2015, Prince Joachim was appointed colonel of the reserve in the Army.

On 1 November 2015, Prince Joachim took up a new position as a special expert in the Armed Forces in relation to the implementation of a new total force concept, which will strengthen the use of volunteers in the Home Guard and personnel from the reserve.

Prince Joachim completed military training at the École Militaire in France in September 2019-2020.

On 1 September 2020, Prince Joachim took up the position of defense attaché at the Danish Embassy in Paris. Prince Joachim was appointed Brigadier General in the Army.

An adventure that Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and their children will embark on later this year.

https://imgix.billedblade...aces%2Centropy&w=1075

For Princess Marie, it will be something very special to return to the United States, where she studied at Babson College in Boston as a young lady and also studied and later worked in New York City. From 1994-1995, the princess studied economics at the University of Geneva, and then she traveled to the United States to start at Babson College in Boston. Shortly afterward, however, the studies were shelved in favor of a job in New York. In 1997, Princess Marie started at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, from where she received a bachelor's degree in humanities in September 1999. After her studies, she worked for a year and a half at an advertising company in New York.

In the midst of all the practical work of settling into a new home, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie must also ensure that they support their children Henrik and Athena when they have to settle into their new everyday life in America.

Henrik and Athena, for example, have to start as students in a new school, but fortunately, they have experience from schooling in both Denmark and France, so it should be fine.

It has not been announced which school Henrik and Athena will attend in Washington DC, but there are several large, fine international schools to choose from. Rochambeau is a good French international school in Washington DC. The private French international school is located in Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC. Also, the British International School of Washington and the Washington International School are educational institutions with an extremely good reputation. There are thus enough schools that can come into play for Prince Joachim and Princess Marie's children, who together with their parents will live in the USA for the next three years.
