During these years, Denmark is strengthening its cooperation with the United States in the area of security and defense, particularly in the area of the defense industry. The USA is Denmark's most important ally and strategic partner, and the appointment of Prince Joachim is done to strengthen the collaboration with the USA.
Prince Joachim will join the Danish Embassy in Washington DC on 1 September 2023, where he will cover the USA and Canada as an attaché. The position is for three years with the possibility of an extension.

It is our ambition to significantly strengthen defense industrial cooperation with the United States, and Prince Joachim will greatly contribute to this," says Acting Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.
As defense industry attaché, Prince Joachim will report to the Ministry of Defense and in day-to-day work to the Ambassador and the Defense Attaché in Washington DC.
Prince Joachim has a thorough knowledge of the Armed Forces, including the completion of military leadership training, experience as a defense attache in France, and knowledge in the defense industrial field, and these are qualifications he can draw on for the position of defense industrial attache in Washington DC

Prince Joachim will continue to carry out certain tasks for the Royal Household to the extent that his work as a defense industry attaché allows it.
The Prime Minister will put forward a proposal for a Parliamentary resolution on Prince Joachim's receipt of an annuity outside the kingdom, as long as he contests the position as defense industry attaché at the Danish embassy in Washington.
Military backgroundPrince Joachim's military training began in 1987 as a recruit in the Queen's Life Regiment. In 1988, Prince Joachim was appointed sergeant, and in 1989 he was appointed lieutenant in the reserve. After being appointed lieutenant, Prince Joachim served from 1989-90 as a platoon leader in a tank squadron at the Prince's Life Regiment.
In 1990, Prince Joachim was appointed first lieutenant of the reserve and in 1992, after completion of further training level I for officers of the reserve (VUT I), appointment as captain of the reserve followed. From 1996 to 2004, Prince Joachim was commander of a tank squadron in the mobilization force at the Prince's Life Regiment and from 2005 attached to the Danish Division's staff as a major of the reserve.
After being appointed lieutenant colonel of the reserve in 2011, Prince Joachim has been appointed head of the Liaison Officers Group in the Total Defense Region of Funen, South, and South Jutland.
In April 2015, Prince Joachim was appointed colonel of the reserve in the Army.
On 1 November 2015, Prince Joachim took up a new position as a special expert in the Armed Forces in relation to the implementation of a new total force concept, which will strengthen the use of volunteers in the Home Guard and personnel from the reserve.
Prince Joachim completed military training at the École Militaire in France in September 2019-2020.
On 1 September 2020, Prince Joachim took up the position of defense attaché at the Danish Embassy in Paris. Prince Joachim was appointed Brigadier General in the Army.
