Queen Máxima takes on new role at the United Nations

Queen Máxima has been appointed in New York as the UN Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Financial Health. The new appointment ends her previous role at the UN as Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, a role she held for fifteen years.

"In a world of economic uncertainty, conflict and climate change, financial services are crucial to helping people take control of their own lives and futures," says Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres about Máxima's appointment.

"As Special Advocate for Financial Health, Her Majesty Queen Máxima will continue her important work to ensure that financial systems can support the dreams, hopes and aspirations of people around the world," Guterres continues.

Queen Máxima herself says that there is still plenty to do and that her work for the UN is far from over. "The work is never done, and as long as I continue to get energy from this work, I will continue to do it," she said.

It was sometimes difficult to combine it with her role as queen: "Of course my priority is my husband and my children and my work in the Netherlands. So I try to use my time effectively. I travel as little as possible and only when it is really necessary: occasionally to New York, Washington or Davos. And I also consult a lot on the phone or I give speeches live via a connection. Technology makes it all easier."

Previous position
Máxima's new UN portfolio is an extension of her previous position.

In the Netherlands, Queen Máxima is also committed to financial health. She does this on behalf of the SchuldenlabNL foundation, the National Coalition for Financial Health and the Wijzer in geldzaken platform.

Financial health
Almost 80 percent of adults worldwide now have at least access to a current account, for example. The Queen says that this has laid "a solid foundation".

"We are very proud with all our partners that this has been achieved, but the work must continue. We really need to offer much better financial products that actually help people, so that they do not end up with unnecessary debts, so that people in the Netherlands can really make it to the end of the month. Or in India: to the end of the day, it is that small."

Máxima hopes that people worldwide, even in the face of adversity, can always keep their heads above water financially: "If people really have a problem, have a sick family member or a death in the family or are dealing with floods or extreme drought, that they have the means to protect themselves."

Queen Máxima will work as a special advocate for the UN Secretary-General for financial health in the coming years. This means that she will get a new position within the United Nations after fifteen years.
According to the Government Information Service, Máxima's new position is an extension of her previous position. For the past fifteen years, the Queen has been a special advocate for inclusive financing for development at the UN.

António Guterres, the Secretary-General at the UN, appointed Máxima to her new position on Wednesday during the UN General Assembly in New York. According to Guterres, her work ensures "that financial systems can support the dreams, hopes and aspirations of people all over the world".

The Queen is also committed to financial health in the Netherlands. This includes preventing financial problems through financial education, making financial problems discussable and solving debts in a proper way. She does this on behalf of various organisations, such as the SchuldenlabNL foundation, the National Coalition for Financial Health and the Wijzer in geldzaken platform.

I like this role for her. It's in her wheelhouse. She's legitimate in her experience and interest in finance, and even if she hasn't been working in the field since becoming CP and Queen, she's kept up in the field and brought visibility to it. The UN is lucky to have her in this role. It's believable and she is smart enough to probably have something useful to offer and good analysis.

The turquoise outfit looks good.

The thing about Max is that somehow she manages to be outrageously overdressed even on such an informal occasion.  These days everything she wears seems to scream ``look at me!!!!!"

Máxima’s worst nightmare is having to spend a whole week in The Netherlands, even the weekend. Maybe she could tolerate it when the kids were still living at home, but only just.

Really does seem they holiday a lot. I think its a bit different if they just move residences to another part of their country and still do duties but jetting off to Greece, St Tropez etc all the time is a bit much.
